The Centralia Sports Hall of Fame

Centralia athletic director Jimmie Evers makes the announcement as Centralia Captain, Chuck Garrett, receives the 1960 Holiday Tourney championship trophy from Centralia hostess Paula Myers.

Garrett received statewide recognition as a member of the 1961 Centralia High School basketball teamthat finished 29-2 and was ranked second in state. He was named to the Chicago American 27 man list as “Best In State” and received Special Mention honors from the Champaign News Gazette.

After high school, he went to McKendree College (now McKendree University) where he was an outstanding starting guard all four years. He held the single game scoring record of 43 points, and was ranked in the top ten NAIA free-throw shooters for two seasons. He is a member of the McKendree University Hall of Fame. His McKendree teams were coached by former Centralian James "Barney" Oldfield and Lou Vesley.

Upon graduating from McKendree Garrett coached the 1967 and 1968 seasons at Patoka High School (36-15), before taking a graduate assistant position at SIU-C under Jack Hartman.

Following a year at North Texas State University, he rejoined Hartman at Kansas State University as a head assistant responsible for recruiting players for the Wildcat teams that went to Big Eight title games and national rankings.

Garrett was tragically killed at age 32 in an automobile accident while on a recruiting assignment in 1975.

In 1994 was inducted into the IBCA hall of fame as a player.

Charles “Chuck” Garrett was an all-state high school basketball player for Centralia. Unhappy at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, he transferred his freshman year to McKendree College. He played on both basketball and baseball teams. He is considered one of McKendree’s outstanding guards. Chuck was a captain, team leader, top scorer, defensive player and four year letter winner under Coaches “Barney” Oldfield and Lou Veseley.
Chuck held the single game scoring record of 43 points and was a four-year starter on the basketball team. He also ranked in the top ten NAIA free-throw shooters for two seasons.
His career in basketball continued after leaving McKendree. He coached two seasons at the high school level before taking a graduate assistant position at SIU Carbondale, working for Jack Hartman.
