Thanks to Stephen Frakes for sharing his collection of obituaries from his work with area cemeteries thru the years.

A lot of these have been typed up by Stephen, and he has also shared many photos from the obituaries as well.

Also thanks to Jim Hester & Mary Cessna, who shared their collection of obituaries they cut from newspapers and saved in photo albums.

These have been scanned so that they can be shared on this website as well.

We have combined the two collections on these pages, and divided them into 5 sections, so that they can be more easily located.

Francis Marion "Frank" Reese

(10 Apr 1883- 18 Nov 1943)

Francis Marion REESE, second son of George and Sarah REESE, was born near St. James, Illinois on April 10, 1883.   At the age of nine years, his parents moved from this vicinity to a farm west of Kinmundy, where the family had resided several years. While still living in this community he was united in marriage to Martha CONANT of Kinmundy on Jan. 18, 1906, and they had two sons and one daughter came to bless this home.

In the year 1913 he was united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  A few years later he purchased the Sam HOWELL farm northeast of Kinmundy and with his family move to their new home, in which community the family still resides.

Not only was he successful in farming during these years, but was also quite an extensive strawberry grower, the past several years being busily engaged with his peach orchards.

In the early spring of this year, his family first learned of his failing health and medical aid was sought to help correct his illness. For a time he seemed to improve, but since early this fall his condition became more serious and he entered the Salem Hospital for treatment. After a few days returned home and later entered the hospital in Effingham. In spite of excellent medical aid and loving care his family gave, his condition failed to improve and on the morning of Nov. 8th at 7:15 a.m. he quietly passed away.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Martha; two sons, Murrell and Lowell and a daughter, Mrs. Mildren SUTTON, two daughters-in-law, three grandchildren, Beryl and Dale and Donna SUTTON, all of near Farina; six brothers, James of Pana, Ill; Charles of Rock Falls, Ill.; Sam of California, Jesse of Kinmundy, Ott of Jolilet, Ill.; Ben of Iowa; one adopted sister, Mrs. Helen ALEXANDER of Christopher.

His father and mother and only sister, Lulu, and two grandchildren, Joyce and Doris REESE preceded him in death.

Not only will he be sadly missed by his immediate family, but by a host of friends and neighbors, whom he was always willing to help in time of need.

STEPHENS, Myrtle Esther (PROSSER)  (died: Feb. 9, 1918)

    C. P. STEPHENS' first wife was Myrtle Esther PROSSER of Shelby County, Illinois.  She committed suicide in California. Her obituary:

Chico Enterprise, Saturday, February 9, 1918, pg 1:

Wife of Durham Physician Shoots Self After Two Shots at Husband: Following a quarrel with her husband, Dr. C.P. Stephens, a physician of Durham, Mrs. Stephens, his wife, fired two shots at him, both of which missed their mark, and then turned the gun upon herself with fatal affect. The bullet

pierced her left breast and she died almost instantly.

The tragedy occurred at 2:20 this morning, a few hours after the couple had returned from Chico where they attended lodge. Stephens was placed under arrest early this morning by Constable J.A. Franklin at the instance [insistence?] of Assistant District Attorney Harry Davids, pending an investigation. He was later released following a coroner’s inquest which

exonerated him.

Mr. and Mrs. Stephens attended a meeting of the Knights and Ladies of Security in the Woodmen hall. They returned to their home in Durham by taxicab, being accompanied by C.A. Colley and Mrs. Ella Dunn. They arrived about midnight, and according to Dr. Stephens, he lighted a fire before retiring.

Had Been Drinking:  According to Dr. Stephens, he had been drinking during the evening. He told his wife he wanted to go to town. She insisted that they go to bed, and violent quarrel arose between them.

Made No Threats: Mrs. Stephens, according to the doctor, made no threats, but left the room appearing a moment later with a .32 Colt automatic. She fired one shot at Stephens while he was seated behind the stove. At the first shot according to Dr. Stephens’ statement, he arose and made for the kitchen door. As he was going out a second shot rang out, again missing and lodging in the china cabinet.

The third shot was fired as he was in the yard. He called Constable Franklin, and when they arrived back at the house, they found Mrs. Stephens lying on the floor of the bedroom, with the revolver lying across her breast.  Placed Under Arrest:  Constable Franklin summed the coroner and the assistant district attorney.

Following an investigation, Davids ordered Dr. Stephens placed under arrest until a complete investigation and a coroner’s inquisition had been held.   Following the returning of the coroner’s jury’s verdict of ‘death caused by gunshot wound, self inflicted with suicidal intent,’ Dr. Stephens was

released.

Attempted to Take Life Before: Mrs. Stephens had attempted on two occasion some years ago to take her own life, according to Dr. Stephens and according to a statement made this morning by Mrs. Joseph Jones of Durham, only a month ago had threatened to commit suicide.

Often Quarreled:  According to neighbors the couple had often quarreled, especially when Stephens had been drinking. Mrs. Stephens was a native of Illinois, and was thirty-six years old.

She married Dr. Stephens about ten years ago, living practically all of that time in Durham. There are no children. Mrs. Stephens has relatives in Illinois.

No arrangements have been made for the funeral.

NOTE by Lois: Myrtle was brought home to Illinois and buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Shelby Co. IL.
