Thanks to Stephen Frakes for sharing his collection of obituaries from his work with area cemeteries thru the years.

A lot of these have been typed up by Stephen, and he has also shared many photos from the obituaries as well.

Also thanks to Jim Hester & Mary Cessna, who shared their collection of obituaries they cut from newspapers and saved in photo albums.

These have been scanned so that they can be shared on this website as well.

We have combined the two collections on these pages, and divided them into 5 sections, so that they can be more easily located.

Marilyn (Miller) Maulding Kaytor

(1929 - 20 October 2007)

A service was held at the Rankin Funeral Home in Salem for Marilyn KAYTOR, 78, of New York, formerly of Kinmundy, with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery in Kinmundy.

KAYTOR died on Saturday, October 20, 2007, of natural causes, shortly before a fire destroyed her apartment. She was born in Kinmundy, the daughter of Arno Hugo Miller and Dorcas (HARVEY) MILLER. She was engaged to Robert Ruark, an essayist, novelist, and big-game hunter, who died shortly before their planned wedding. Her previous marriages to Richard MAULDING, MD, and to Albert KAYTOR, a painter and graphic art director at CBS, ended in divorce.

She received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois, and was a creative and influential food editor and writer based in New York. As one of the first international food journalists to write for an American news magazine, for 12 years she was the food editor for Look Magazine, during a formative period of food journalism in the 1950s and '60s. She also wrote and produced numerous stories for other publications including Esquire, New York, The Los Angeles Times, Bon Appétit, The Saturday Evening Post, Cuisine, and Gaceta, and authored the book "21, The Life and Times of New York's Favorite Club." Her work won many awards for visual and editorial coverage, and her productions are in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Library of Congress. Before the existence of specialized food professionals, she conceived the ideas for her articles, traveled to do research, wrote the stories, tested the recipes, scouted shoot locations, gathered props, and styled the photo shoots, hiring prominent fashion and art photographers, such as Irving Penn, Hiro, and Arthur Rothstein. While Americans were learning of French cuisine, she presented stories on food from the West Indies to the Balkans, writing about everyday food and elite cuisine. She traveled to Greece, had lunch in the desert with a Bedouin sheik in his tent, lived and worked for years in Palamos, Spain, and hosted flamboyant dinner parties in her New York apartment.

Survivors include: two sisters, Helen HOUSE PHIPPS of Champaign and Norma MILLER ELET of Douglastown, New York; her nieces, Carolyn HOUSE FERGUSON of West Orange, New Jersey, Carla HOUSE of Atlanta, Georgia, and Yvonne ELET of Brooklyn, New York; and a nephew, Gregory HOUSE of Champaign.

Carolyn Jean (Hoard) Maxey - 16 July 1940 - 28 September 2015)

Eloise Jeanette (Hohlt) Maxey

(23 October 1929 - 23 February 2018)

Eloise Jeanette MAXEY (Jean), 88, of Greeley passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2018, at her home southeast of Greeley.

Jean was born to Elno and Florence (NORMAN) HOHLT on Oct. 23, 1929, in Kinmundy, Ill. She graduated from Farina High School in 1948 and from Washington University’s School of Nursing in St Louis, Mo. in 1951. She was a member of Friedens United Church of Christ in Farina, where she married George MAXEY on Dec. 26, 1950. The couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyo., when George was stationed at F. E. Warren AFB in 1951. They moved to the farm two miles west of Kersey in October 1954 where George was herdsman for C.W. Henry and Jean served as a private nurse for Mrs Henry during her battle with cancer. The couple later purchased the herd and land, eventually naming it Maxey Farms.

An integral part of the dairy farm operation, Jean daily fed calves, carried milk, washed equipment and helped keep records on the registered Holstein herd for more than 45 years. She also enjoyed time spent on her tractor raking alfalfa hay. Until her passing, she remained an active member of Colorado Dairy Women.

In 1966 Jean became the first school nurse employed by Platte Valley Schools in Kersey, a position she loved and held for 29 years. She maintained an 8-bed sick bay, engaged teams of volunteers to help her conduct vaccination clinics, vision and hearing screenings, and coordinate sports physical clinics. She taught health classes and went on many home visits. Before there was an EMT presence, she attended all home sporting events to provide medical assistance. Following her retirement in 1995, Jean continued her connection with the school through attendance at athletic events and support of the community until one month before her passing. She enjoyed regular fellowship with the retired teachers and staff from Platte Valley.

In addition to nursing, Jean participated in several home extension clubs in her area: Auburn Progressive, Pleasant Valley Home Demonstration, and the West Kersey clubs. She was a leader for the Box Elder Home Ec 4-H Club for many years. Jean served two terms on the advisory board for the Weld County Department of Public Health.

For more than 60 years she was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Greeley (now Cornerstone Community), where she taught the 2-year-old Sunday School class for 19 years, and was active in the Mariners and Ancient Mariners Clubs.

Jean spent hours every summer in her quarter-acre garden, planning, raising, preserving and sharing produce with many, feeding her family and others. She was a precursor of the farm-to-table movement; fresh, whole, raw milk was served at nearly every meal, and she especially liked making fried chicken. Staff at Platte Valley as well as many neighbors and friends enjoyed her from-scratch baked goods. She was also an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed sewing, whether Easter dresses for her daughters, uniforms for herself, patches for farm coveralls, or hems on baseball officials’ pants. Jean avidly followed the Colorado Rockies, the Denver Nuggets, and Platte Valley athletics.

Above all, Jean was mother to five children, grandmother to 16, and great-grandmother to 20. All were considered her “favorite.” Known by family and friends for her ability to remember details, including names and relationships spanning several generations, she made everyone feel special and loved. Many received cards or letters from her hand. She will be missed.

Jean is survived by her husband of 67 years, George; children, Debra (Calvin) HELUS of Colorado Springs, Peggy (Karl) ANDERSON of Bow, Wash., Keith (Lynn) MAXEY, Teresa (Rick) SPONAUGLE, and Jeff (DeAnne) MAXEY, all of rural Greeley.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by infant brothers Frederick and James, close friend and brother Jack HOHLT; and grandson Spencer ERVIN.

Services are at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 3, at Cornerstone Community Church, 1321 9th Ave., Greeley. Condolences, as well as any memorial contributions, may be sent to the family in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 702 13th St., Greeley, Colo. 80631. Gifts can be designated for the “Jean Maxey Memorial Scholarship Fund” for Platte Valley students entering the health sciences field, or to the “Memorial Fund” at Cornerstone Community Church.

(13 Jul 1924 - 21 Oct 2012)

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, at East Lawn Cemetery in Salem for Juanita McCARTY, 88, of Champaign. Visitation is tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Dr. West in Savoy.

McCARTY died at 1:30 p.m. on October 21, 2012, at Carle Hospital,  after spending the last several years at Heartland Nursing Home of Paxton.  She was born on July 13, 1924, the daughter of Otis Paul and Arline NOBLE CUNNINGHAM. On October 15, 1950, she married Morris McCARTY in Salem.

Juanita was born in Texas oil wildcatters and endured with her family the hardships of this life style and the Great Depression. Despite these trials, her parents, Otis Paul and Arline, moved to Salem, where they started a successful pipe and supply business which flourished throughout the 1950's and 1960's. The business was eventually closed after her father died and her mother could no longer handle its rigors due to age and health problems. Juanita, however, learned from her parents' entrepreneurial spirit and started many successful businesses, mostly in the antique area. She and her partners owned antique shops in Savoy, Champaign and Monticello. Also, she and her husband, Morris, ran a variety of antique flea markets and antique shows. The most notable was located in Lincoln Square for many

years after Morris's death and Juanita's decline led to this business being sold as well. During the time of Juanita's business ventures, she also played the role of a traditional housewife to her husband and children. She prepared the meals and home and participated in all of the children's extracurricular activities, spending most of her summer days and nights at various ball fields throughout the Champaign metro area and neighboring towns.

Survivors include: her sons, Kevin and Tim; grandchildren, Michael, Megan, Max, and Jake; and great-granddaughter, Kesa.

WESLEY EDWARD MULVANEY, 66, DIES

(26 May 1911 - 4 Mar 1978)

Wesley Edward, son of Wesley and Sarah Wilson Mulvaney, departed this life March 4, 1978, at the age of 66 years, 9 months, and 6 days.  He was born in Meacham Township on May 26, 1911.  He was united in marriage to Laura Longcor June 20, 1936, who survives.  Also surviving are two sisters, Nellie Gordon of Kinmundy and Lillian Yates of Salem.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Charles, Ervin, and Ray; and four sisters, Edith, Murtle Perry, Belle Outhouse, and Lucy Thompson.  Ed was a member of Meacham Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, and assistant song leader.   He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.

Ed's favorite chapter of the Bible was the 23rd Psalm and the Sunday before he went to be with the Lord he asked the congregation if we didn't all agree that it was wonderful to know that we would go to live in the house of the Lord forever.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want

he maketh me to lie down in Green pastures:

he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the

path of righteousness for his name's sake.

Yeah though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod

and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of  mine

enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

CARD OF THANKS

May God bless each and every one who helped in any way to give us strength,  Thank you for the food, flowers, cads, money and your prayers.
