Walton Family Immigration
This Walton family, from what information we have been able to gather, began in New Kent County, Virginia. They moved to Cumberland County, Virginia, which was originally Goochland County, where the family lived for many years. They then moved to Smith County, Tennessee for a short time then to Franklin County, Missiouri, where some of the family remained.
In 1836, our branch of the Walton family moved to Patoka, Marion County, Illinois from Franklin County, Missouri.

Edward married Elizabeth MASON circa 1698, Virginia. She was born 1686, Norfolk County, Virginia, daughter of Lemuel and Mary (THELABALL) MASON.
Lemuel was born circa 1649, Norfolk County, Virginia, son of Lemuel and Ann (SEAWALL) MASON. He died 1702, Norfolk County, Virginia. Lemuel, Sr. was born 1628, Norfolk County, Virginia, son of Francis and Alice (GAYNEY) MASON. He died 15 Sep 1702, Norfolk County, Virginia. Ann was born 1635, Norfolk County, Virginia. Francis and Alice were from England. Alice was born 1596, St. Mary Magdelene, Bermonsey, Surry, England.

Thomas G. WALTON, born 1760, Cumberland County, Virginia, son of George and Margaret (TABB) WALTON. Thomas died 1825, Smith County, Tennessee.
Thomas married Agnes Martha MOSBY 1785, Cumberland County, Virginia. She was born 1768, Cumberland County, Virginia.
In 1805, Thomas and Agnes moved their family to Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee.
In 1826, the estate of Phoebe wife of William H. ARMISTEAD, daughter of Thomas G. WALTON, estate was being administered by Thomas' son-in-law Edward GLOVER. In the estate records were several deeds conveying lands on Puncheon Camp Creek, being part of a 1000 acres survey that Thomas G. WALTON formerly lived on. They identify Thomas G. WALTON's heirs as including Edward M. WALTON, George WALTON, Edward GLOVER and his wife Polley, formerly Polley WALTON, William H. ARMISTEAD and wife Phoeaby C. WALTON, Seth BURTON and wife Martha M. WALTON, William NICHOLS and wife Nancy F. WALTON in Marion County, Elinoy (Illinois) in 1826 when they gave Edward M. WALTON a power of attorney, Edward BRADLEY and wife Lockey WALTON, and Narysia WALTON.

2. Phoebe C. WALTON, born 1791-1796, Smith County, Tennessee.
Phoebe married William H. ARMISTEAD.
In 1835, William M. ARMISTEAD sold a slave Gabriel to Timothy WALTON. At the same time James Walton of Sumner County and Timothy WALTON of Smith County conveyed to "Betsy Ann, Martha Jane, Eliza Linton, George Thompson, and William Joseph Armistead heirs of Wm ARMISTEAD of the other part, all of Smith County, 110 acres on Snow Creek in Smith "including" the plantation where the said William M. ARMISTEAD now lives." Deeds of 1816 in Smith County (Book E, pp 318, 459) identify James, Isaac and Timothy WALTON, Arthur S. HOGAN and wife Rachel, Nathaniel M. WILLIAMS and wife Sarah Jane as heirs of Col. William WALTON, deceased and Sarah WALTON his widow.
In 1833-1835, William and Phoebe moved from Smith County, Tennessee to Franklin County, Missouri.

Polly married Edward GLOVER.

Martha married Seth BURTON.
5. Nancy F. WALTON, born 1798, Cumberland County, Virginia.
Married William N. NICHOLS. He was born circa 1786, Halifax County, Virginia, son of Jesse and Lucy (MANN) NICHOLS. He died in Boone County, Missouri.
In 1826, they were living in Marion County, Illinois.
William's sister, Sarah "Sally" NICHOLS married James Bulger ALTOM, who had many descendents living in Marion County, Illinois. (See Altom Family in the files section of the Patoka Yahoo Group)

Robert married Cordelia LANHAM . She was born 1819/20, Missouri, daughter of Richard and Sarah M. (SAPPINGTON) LANHAM.
On 14 Oct 1850, the census shows Robert (32) and Cordelia (30) NICHOLS were living in Boone County, Missouri. With them were their children Richard O. age 5; and Peter N. age 3. Robert was a Cooper.
6. Lockey WALTON, born 1800, Cumberland County, Virginia.
Lockey married Edward BRADLEY.

George H. WALTON, born 20 Jan 1801, Cumberland County, Virginia, son of Thomas G. and Agnes (MOSBY) WALTON (See Chapter 1). George died 26 Jul 1851, Marion County, Illinois, from cholera. Burial in the Meador Cemetery, Section 14, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois.
George married Mary A. TERRY. She was born 15 Jun 1803, Virginia, daughter of George and Mary (JACOB) TERRY. She died 25 Jul 1851, Marion County, Illinois, from cholera. Burial in the Meador Cemetery, Section 14, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois.
In 1819, George took a tour of Illinois to see if it was a place he would want to move to. He then returned to Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee. He then moved to Union, Franklin County, Missouri.
In 1836, George and family moved from Franklin County, Missouri to Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois, after losing everything they owned in a flood. He purchased 80 acres of land.
In 1840, the census shows George WALTON living in Marion County, Illinois. 1 male and 1 female age 30-39; 1 male and 1 female age 5-9; 1 male and 2 females under age 5.
On 22 Oct 1850, the census shows George (49) and Mary (47) WALTON living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children: William WALTON age 20; Robert WALTON age 16; Joel WALTON age 14; and Iradel WALTON age 11.

They had several children.

On 22 Oct 1850, the census shows Joseph (24) and Rachel (28) MEADOR living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. They lived next to Rachel's parents.
Jospeh was a brick mason.

Nancy married 1st Elias MEADOR 17 Feb 1844, Marion County, Illinois. He was born 3 Jan 1819, Smith County, Tennessee, son of Joel and Malinda (HOLT) MEADOR. Elias died 5 Sep 1858. Burial in Meador Cemetery, Section 14, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinos.
Nancy married 2nd Mordicai Thomas BALLANCE 9 Jan 1859, Marion County, Illinois. He was born 10 Mar 1818, Kentucky/Tennessee.
Joel MEADOR was the son of Jeptha and Sarah (HIER) MEADOR. Jephtie and Sarah were both from Virginia. They came to Marion County, Illinois in 1829. Jephtie was a blacksmith, farmer and preacher.
On 22 Oct 1850, the census shows Elias (28) and Nancy (23) WALTON living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Edward age 3; and Sarah age 7 months.
On 25 Jun 1870, the census shows M. T. (52) and Nancy (43) BALANCE living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. They had a Patoka address. With them was his children Thomas R. BALANCE age 24; Hiram BALANCE age 18; and Lydia BALANCE age 15; her children Rachel MEADORS age 18; and Eldorus MEADORS a BALANCE age age 15; and their son George BALANCE age 9.

William married Caroline V. LAWRENCE 13 Apr 1852, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 1834/35, Macon County, Tennessee, daughter of Samuel and Leanna (___?___) LAWRENCE (See Lawrence Family - Chapter 1).
On 22 Sep 1853, William WALTON purchased 40 acres in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois (SENE, Sec. 15, O4N O1E) Cost was $2.50 an acre, total of $100.00. Vol. 148, pg 88.

Joel T. WALTON, born 18 Jul 1836, Franklin County, Missouri, son of George H. and Mary A. (TERRY) WALTON. Joel died 22 Sep 1907. They are buried in the Tilman/Vernon Cemetery, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Joel married Nancy LAYMAN 12 Nov 1865, Marion County, Illinois. Nancy was born 16 Jul 1847, Clinton County, Illinois, daughter of William and Sarah (MORRIS) LAYMAN (See Morris Family, Chapter 3). William was born Jul 1811, Virginia. Nancy died 22 Sep 1928, Vernon, Marion County, Illinois. Nancy moved with her family to Patoka Township, Marion County in 1851.
Before the Civil War, Joel was a school teacher.
On 12 Aug 1862, Joel enlisted into the Union Army of the United States of America during the Civil War. He was a private in Companty D of the Illinois 111th Regiment. He was captured and held in Anderson prison.
On 19 Sep 1864, Joel was exchanged in Atlanta, Georgia.
On 1 Apr 1865, Joel was released from prison in a soldier exchange.
On 1 Jul 1865, Joel was mustered out of service of the military. He was noted for Distinguished Service.
On 25 Jun 1870, the census shows Joel J. (34) and Nancy (25) WALTON living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their daughters Mary age 2; and Sarah age 1. Joel was born in Missouri. Nancy and the daughters were born in Illinois. Their real estate was valued at $1,200.00. Their personal property was valued at $350.00. Joel was a farmer.
On 6 Jun 1880, the census shows Joseph (43) and Nancy (32) WALTON living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Mary age 18; Sarah age 16; Mary age 9; George age 5; Jesse age 3; and Baby daughter age 5 months. Also living with them were two servants John KENEEDY age 23; and George SELLARS age 16. Joel was born in Missouri. His father was born in Virginia. His mother was born in Tennessee. Nancy was born in Illinois. Her father was born in Virginia. Joel was a farmer.
On 8 Feb 1886, Joel T. WALTON purchased 40 acres in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois (SWSW, Section 10, O4N O1E). Cost was $10.00 an acre, total of $400.00.
On 20 Jun 1900, the census shows Joseph T. (63) and Nancy (52) WALTON living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Jesse E. age 23; Daisy M. age 17; Nellie age 19. Also with them was Nancy's widowed father William LAYMAN age 88, born in Virginia. Joel owned his farm free of mortgage. Nancy's mother was born in Georgia.
On 29 Apr 1910, the census shows the widowed Nancy WALTON age 62, living in Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. With here were her daughters Sally age 39; and Daisy age 27. Nancy owned her farm free of mortgage.
Nancy received a pension after the death of Joel, for his service in the military.
On 9 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Nancy WALTON age 73 living in Vernon, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois, with her widowed daugther, Flora DICKEY and family.

9-2. Sarah A. "Sally" WALTON, born 4 Sep 1870, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. She died 19 Aug 1947. Buried in the Tilman/Vernon Cemetery, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. Birth year has to be wrong on the grave stone. She was already a year old in Jun 1870, when they took the census.

9-7-1. Hubert R. DOOLEN, born 2 Oct 1904. Hubert died 24 Sep 1969. Burial in Doolen Cemetery, Section 7, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Hubert married Zula P. TUNE. She was born 6 Apr 1909. She died 25 Jun 1977. Burial in Doolen Cemetery, Section 7, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.

Flora H. WALTON, born 1871, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Joel J. and Nancy (LAYMAN) WALTON. She died 1955. Buried in Hatch Cemetery, Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Flora married Thomas K. DICKEY 4 Sep 1895, Marion County, Illinois, as his 2nd wife. He was born 6 Feb 1843, Covington, Kentucky, son of Ethelbert W. S. and Mary Hannah (KENNEDY) DICKEY. He died 1917.
Thomas' 1st wife was Alice MURFIN, daughter of Warrren and Emily MURFIN. Thomas' grandparents were Alexander DICKEY; and Thomas D. and Nancy E. (DAVIS) KENNEDY.
Thomas was a School Director. He was one of the first Trustees of the town of Vernon.
In 1872, Thomas moved to Vernon, Marion County, Illinois and lived there the rest of his life. He owned 160 acres in Section 16 and 80 acres in Section 9 of Patoka Township.

WALTON on November 27, 1943. Kathryn passed away on May 10, 1983. On October 20, 1984 Thomas married Rose A. STRINGER. Thomas worked at A.E. Staley for 42 years and served in the Army during World War II. He was a Boy Scout leader in Mt. Zion and a volunteer fireman in Long Creek for many years. Thomas belonged to Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, American Legion, Moose, and Elks. He loved working in his vegetable garden. He enjoyed camping and was a member of the Sta-Rolling Camping Club. Surviving are his wife, Rose, and his four children: Sharon (Gary) SPINNER of Mt. Zion, Ronald (Cheryl) BELCHER of Decatur, Allen (Colleen) BELCHER of Jacksonville, Illinois, Randy BELCHER (Kim FINNEY) of Decatur, and step-daughter Debra (James) Henderson of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Also surviving: 7 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 3 great-granddaughters, 2 step-great granddaughters, 1 step-great grandson, sister-in-law Edna BELCHER of Vandalia, Ohio and brother-in-law Richard (Alice) WALTON of Normal, Illinois. Edith was a very loving, caring and beautiful lady. I remember her deviled eggs. They were so good. She also made me a lemon pie totally from scratch once and it was the best pie ever. My great-grandmother, Maggie (McWHIRTER) BASSETT, was one of her best friends. My great-aunt, Edith (BASSETT) ARNOLD, was named for her.
Ankney was a Jehovah's Witness. Edith was a Methodist.
They lived in the Nichols Home Place on the north side of Kinoka Road, east of Jones Road.
In her latter years, she moved into a mobile home next to her daughter's house, Lela May's.

He preceded her in death on June 2, 2000. A homemaker, she was a member of the Lovell Grove (1880) Church in Omega and the Ladies Friendship Circle. She was also a member of the Omega Booster Club. On 14 Apr 1949, the Kinmundy Express has, "C.A. WALTON, Foster Farmer, Injured by Tractor and Disc Monday: Mr. C.A. WALTON, 52, prominent farmer of Foster twp., was injured Monday afternoon by being run over by his tractor and disc. He is in the Mark Greer Hospital and in very serious condition. Mr. WALTON was discing corn ridges for oats. He let his tractor run while he stepped off to scatter the accumulated corn stalks, then got back on his tractor while it was in motion. The tractor is a Ford and it is necessary to get on the machine just in front of the rear wheels. In getting on, his foot slipped and he was dragged under the rear wheels. Then the disc came over him. His father, Mr. Orville WALTON, was sowing the oats with a team but was going in the opposite direction. When he turned at the end of the field, he noticed the tractor running wild. He then noticed his son and ran to his aid. In passing the tractor he switched off the ignition, stopping the machine. Mr. Louie SOUTIER was working in a neighboring field. The elder Mr. WALTON summoned him and then ran to the house for his daughter-in-law. The other neighbors were summoned as well as the ambulance. One foot was severed, the abdomen was cut open, as well as several other cuts about the body. After reaching the hospital, it was found that both shoulders were broken, the spine was injured, and the bladder cut open by the disc. In spit of all this, it is reported that he remains conscious most of the time."
Addis was disabled after the accident.
Mildred moved into Patoka in later years.

He was born on July 22, 1934 in Alma, Illinois, the son of Charles and Mildred (ARNOLD) WALTON. He married Phyllis TEEL on November 15, 1961 in Christopher, Illinois. Survivors include wife Phyllis WALTON of Arizona; son Rev. John K. WALTON and wife Tracy of Indiana; daughters Esther WALTON of Centralia, Illinois and Miriam WALTON of Arizona; sister Leah ADAMS of Texas; and brother Charles WALTON of California.
Mr. WALTON was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Duane WALTON and Ward WALTON. James lived in Patoka all of his life. He was in the Air Force Reserve and in the Air National Guard of California. Over the years James served as a missionary school teacher, nurse’s assistant, and a general laborer. Mr. WALTON also was a member of the Nazarene Church. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4th, 2015 at Sandy Branch Cemetery in Kinmundy, Illinois. Rev. John WALTON will officiate. There will not be a visitation. Day Macz Funeral Homes in Patoka is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.
