Abraham SMITH, born 1775, North Carolina. Abraham died 1854, Section 10, Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois (located on what was then the Vandalia-Salem Road).
Abrham married Lucy SEXTON .
In 1831, Abraham SMITH settled on section 20 of Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois.
On 21 Oct 1850, the census shows Abraham (75) and Lucy (75) SMITH living in District 11, Marion County, Illinois. Both said to have been born in North Carolina. Abraham was a Farmer. (Note: They were living next to their son, John SMITH and family.)
"Abraham SMITH located on section twenty in 1831. He lived near Salem one year prior to this. He died on the Vandalia and Salem road, on section ten, in 1854. He raised a family of five sons and two daughters. Five of the family are yet living. Two of is sons, Mordecai and Britton, came to Salem in 1829. They were then single men, aged twenty-six and eighteen--the former married and subsequently settled in Foster township, 1832, where he now resides. The latter drove stage, worked by the month, and kept a grocery store at Salem until 1837. He then married, and the same year bought an improvement on section twenty-eight, where he lived until 1840. In 1830, the census shows Henry POOL living in Marion County, Illinois. In his household were: 2 men and 1 woman age 20-29; 1 male and 2 females under the age of 5.
In 1840, the census shows Henry POOL living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. In the household were: 1 male and 1 female ages-30-39; 1 female age 15-19; 1 female age 10-14; 2 males and 1 female age 5-9; and 1 male and 1 female under the age of 5.
On 24 Oct 1850, the census shows Henry (43) and Maryann (42) POOL living in Marion County, Illinois. Both said to have been born in North Carolina. Henry was a farmer. Maryann could not read or write. With them were: Sarah POOL age 21; Martha POOL age 15; George POOL age 11; Eliza POOL age 8; William POOL age 6: Mariam POOL age 3; and Edmond POOL age 1. All born in Illinois.
On 22 Nov 1854, Henry POOL purchased 80 acres, W2SW in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois.
On 16 Aug 1860, the census shows Henry (54) and Meriann (54) POOL living in Carrigan Township, Marion County, Illinois. Both said to have been born in North Carolina. He was a farmer. His personal property was valued at $400. With them were: George POOL age 22; Lizzie POOL age 18; William POOL age 16; Madie POOL age 14; Edmond POOL age 11. Also with them was Lucy SMITH age 84, born North Carolina.
On 26 Jun 1870, the census hows Henry (63) and Marion (63) POOL living in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. Both said to have been born in North Carolina. Henry was a farmer. His real estate was valued at $800 and his personal at $280. With them was their son, Edmond POOL age 20.

Jessie and Anna were the parents of one daughter, Jessie Mae LEWIS. Jesse estranged from his wife, shot her and then took his own life. Their daughter Jessie Mae Lewis was put in an orphanage and the Lewis family never knew what became of her.

Mordecai married 1st Sarah "Sally" PURSLEY 23 Jun 1831, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 12 Sep 1815, Bond County, Illinois, daughter of William and Lydia (LITTLE) PURSLEY. Sally died 5 Oct 1873, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Burial in the Jones Cemetery, Jones Road, Section 28, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. (Note: Marriage record has Morica SMITH married Sally PARSLEY.)
Mordecai married 2nd Mrs. Rachel BURROWS 26 Oct 1875, Marion County, Illinois. She was born circa 1823, Ohio. I believe she was the widow of Henry G. BURROW.
In 1822, William and Lydia PURSLEY settled in Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois. He died shortly thereafter.
In 1829 Mordecai SMITH age 18 and his brother Britton SMITH age 26, moved to Salem, Marion County, Illinois. Both were single. Their father, Abraham SMITH, moved to Marion County, Illinois in 1831.

On 3 Oct 1850, the census shows Mortica (46) and Sarah (36) SMITH living in Marion County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in North Carolina. She was said to have been born in Illinois. He was a farmer. Their real estate was valued at $800. With them were: William SMITH age 18; Mary SMITH age 15; Lucy SMITH age 13; Nancy SMITH age 10; Lydia SMITH age 8; Fanny SMITH age 5; Amanda SMITH age 4 months; and Thomas HOUSTON age 15. All born in Illinois. William and Thomas were farmers.
On 31 Jan 1855, Mordecai SMITH purchased 40 acres in Section 34 (NWNW) Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
On 26 Aug 1860, the census shows Mordecai (56) and Sarah (45) SMITH living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in North Carolina. She was said to have been born in Illinois. Their real estate was valued at $8,000 and their personal property at $1,500. With them were: Lydia SMITH age 18, born IL; Elizabeth SMITH age 2, born IL; and Elizabeth D. PERSELY age 19, born IL.
On 22 Feb 1864, Mordecai SMITH purchased 40 acres of Section 30 (NENE), Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Cost of $8 per acre, total of $320.
On 31 Mar 1869, Mordecai SMITH purchased 40 acres in Section 14 (SWSE) Patoka Township, Marion County, Illinois. Cost of $10 an acre, total of $400.
On 21 Jun 1870, the census shows Mordeca (66) and Sarah (54) SMITH living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Fosterburg post office. In 1881, The History of Clinton and Marion Counties, Illinois was published with the following in it, "Abraham SMITH located on section twenty in 1831. He lived near Salem one year prior to this. He died on the Vandalia and Salem road, on section ten, in 1854. He raised a family of five sons and two daughters. Five of the family are yet living. Two of is sons, Mordecai and Britton, came to Salem in 1829. They were then single men, aged twenty-six and eighteen--the former married and subsequently settled in Foster township, 1832, where he now resides. The latter drove stage, worked by the month, and kept a grocery store at Salem until 1837. He then married, and the same year bought an improvement on section twenty-eight, where he lived until 1840. Lola was born a twin. Her twin sister, Lula BELCHER, married Cyrus Harley COLE, and had a daughter, Lola Pauline COLE, who married Dale Lawrence SIMCOX, brother of Harold James SIMCOX. In other words, "Johnnie" and Dale SIMCOX had mothers-in-law who were twin sisters.

"Abraham SMITH located on section twenty in 1831. He lived near Salem one year prior to this. He died on the Vandalia and Salem road, on section ten, in 1854. He raised a family of five sons and two daughters. Five of the family are yet living. Two of is sons, Mordecai and Britton, came to Salem in 1829. They were then single men, aged twenty-six and eighteen--the former married and subsequently settled in Foster township, 1832, where he now resides. The latter drove stage, worked by the month, and kept a grocery store at Salem until 1837. He then married, and the same year bought an improvement on section twenty-eight, where he lived until 1840. Charles Britton "C.B." "Charley" SMITH, born 7 Nov 1873, Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of John and Elizabeth Ann (SMITH) SMITH. C.B. died 30 May 1943, Anna, Illinois.
On 14 Jan 1943, the Kinmundy Express has, "C.B. SMITH sold his business to Howard DISS, better known as Jack, who took possession Saturday evening. Mr. DISS is no stranger to this community, having been born and reared northwest of this city. For the past several years, he has purchased the surplus grain of the community and trucked it to East St. Louis to the market. Mr. SMITH was rounding out his 48th year in the business world in this city. It was then that he became associated with the late T.M. SMITH in the livery, hay, and grain business, later added other lines such as implements, grass seed, etc. This firm has done an enormous business in its day, shipping corn and oats. Mr. SMITH died in 1934, and Charley, as we know him, purchased T.M.’s interest from the heirs. Business was good until about 3 years when Charley’s health began to fail and couldn’t give his full attention to the business. He is domiciled in the Mattie CHANCE home and will take it easy for awhile."
On 27 May 1943, the Kinmundy Express has, "Charles B. SMITH became seriously ill in the home of Mrs. Mattie CHANCE week before last and it was necessary to take him to the Anna State Hospital last week, where he passed away Sunday. Services were held from the Methodist Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Charles Britton SMITH, second son of John and Elizabeth SMITH, was born near Tonti, Nov. 7, 1873, and died May 30, 1943. He was a family of 6 children, 1 brother, 3 half-brothers, and a half-sister. Two brothers, Marvin and Hilary and a sister, Ethel, preceded him in death. Charles was left motherless at the age of 3 years. He was converted at an early age and joined the Southern Methodist Church at Zion. When a young man, he came to Kinmundy and went into business with his uncle, T. M. SMITH with whom he made his home and lived as one of the family til this home was broken up by death. After the death of T.M. SMITH, Chas. carried on the business till forced to retire in Jan. 1943 because of failing health. For the past 4 months he was cared for in the home of Mrs. Mattie CHANCE. He leaves 2 brothers, George, of Bloomington; Harry of Alma; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Hilary SMITH, also of Alma; and 3 cousins who always considered him as an older brother, Mrs. G. M. NIRIDER of Decatur, Ill.; Mrs. Minnie RUDOLPH of Vallejo, Calif.; and Mrs. Georgia EAGAN, Antinito, Colo."

On 11 Jan 1923, the Kinmundy Express has, "Burl Eugene, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn PARKER of O’Fallon, died at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. CHANCE of this city on Saturday morning at the age of 1 month and 22 days. The funeral was held at the J.R. CHANCE home on Sunday. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery."
On 10 Nov 1927, the Kinmundy Express has, "On Nov. 6, a large number of relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. CHANCE to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. CHANCE were away and upon returning found a large number in their home and the table loaded. Those present at their anniversary that were present at the wedding were: S. W. GRAY on Nov. 9, 1892, and they had 6 children, 2 sons and 4 daughters: Seymour and Fred CHANCE, and Dorothy BOUSEMAN of Kinmundy; Lillie PARKER of Nokomis, Ill.; and Mildred TWIGG of Danville. 1 daughter, Bessie AUMILLER, preceded him in death on Apr. 17, 1932. He leaves a wife, 5 children, 12 grandchildren, 2 brothers, and 3 sisters. Services were held at the M.E. Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery."

On 3 Aug 1939, the Kinmundy Express has, "William A. GRAY, son of John H. and Rebecca Ann GRAY, was born in Tonti twp. near Salem on Aug. 21, 1880. He died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Mattie CHANCE in Kinmundy on July 26, 1939. Throughout his entire life he had been in poor health, and during the past year had gradually failed. Due to the condition of his health, Mr. GRAY was unable to leave the home of his parents where he lived until their death. During the past 23 years, he has made his home in Kinmundy with his sister, Mrs. Mattie CHANCE. He united with the Methodist Church at Cubbage Chapel. He leaves 3 sisters, namely, Mrs. Susan BLACK of near Salem, Mrs. Mattie CHANCE of Kinmundy, and Etta GRAY also of near Salem. Services were held at the home here in this city following which the body was taken to Fredonia Church where services were held. Interment was held in Fredonia Cemetery."

She married Nov. 9, 1892, to James Riley CHANCE. They had 6 children: Seymour of Kinmundy; Fred of Alma; Mildred PRYOR of Oblong; and Dorothy BOUSMAN of Farina. Two daughters, Lily PARKER and Bessie AUMILLER, and her faithful companion preceded her in death. In early childhood she united with the Cubbage Chapel Church, later transferring to Kinmundy in 1918, where she remained a faithful member. She entered the hospital on Nov. 29. Besides the children, she leaves one sister, Mrs. Susan BLACK of Salem; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Services were held from the Methodist Church in this city on Friday officiated by Rev. J.N. PRESLEY of Farina. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery."

On 23 May 1946, the Kinmundy Express has, "James CHANCE, Fireman 1st Class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Seymour CHANCE, arrived home last Thursday to spend a 30 day leave with his parents. James entered the service Jan. 12, 1945, and received his boot training at Great Lakes. From there he was sent to Shumaker, Calif., from there to Treasure Island, then to PT Base 17, Philippine Islands, where he was stationed for the past 13 months. He left the Philippines April 22, and landed on Treasure Island, May 10th. After his leave has expired, he will report to Chicago for reassignment. (A picture accompanied this article.)"

On 7 Mar 1946, the Kinmundy Express has, "T5 Harold CHANCE, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.S. CHANCE, residing northwest of this city, arrived home Feb. 24, after seeing action in both theaters of war. Harold entered the service June 18, 1943 and took basic at Camp Crowder, Mo. in the Signal Corps. He shipped overseas Feb. 11, 1945, landing in France. From there he went into Germany, then back to France, where he shipped for Luzon. From there he went to Japan. He left Japan the latter part of January and landed in Seattle, Wash. From there he went to Jefferson Barracks, where he received his discharge Feb. 24. T5 CHANCE wears the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon, the European Theater Ribbon with 1 star representing the campaign of Central Germany, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon; the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon and the Distinguished Service Unit Citation awarded for service in Central Germany. As to his future, Harold says he is undecided as to what he will do."
On 25 Nov 1948, the Kinmundy Express has, "Mrs. Irene HANNA and Harold CHANCE were married Saturday at 8:30 mass in St. Philomena’s church in this city, Rev. Fr. A.B. SCHOMAKER, officiating. They were attended by a brother of the bride and his wife. The wedding march was played by Mrs. Fred KLEISS, and Mrs. W.B. VALLOW sang two songs. Immediately after the ceremony, the couple left for Chicago to spend a few days with relatives. The bride is the widow of the late PFC Beauford L. HANNA. She was born and reared in Chicago, but for the past several years has made her home in this city where she has many friends. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.S. CHANCE residing northwest of this city. He spent 4 years in the service, and saw action in the Southwest Pacific. He is a promising young farmer."

The groom is son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. CHANCE of this city. The bride is daughter of L. N. KENNEDY who resides 3 miles south of town. The couple will live in Cropsey, Ill."

Sunday morning was spent in visiting the old home about 3 miles southeast of Kinmundy which was started in March 1, 1883, when L.N. KENNEDY and Ida CRAIG were united in marriage. The 6 children, were all born and raised in this neighborhood. The old schoolhouse was visited and the Camp Ground Church, where the father, children, and their families met again in Sunday School and Church as in days gone by. Their mother died March 17, 1916. Present at the noon hour besides sisters and their families were: L.N. KENNEDY, the father and his present wife, an uncle, T.M. SPYKER of Streator, Ill."

He was walking with his arms full of boxes and stepped into an empty elevator shaft, falling 2 stories suffering from a serious head injury and broken bones. Mrs. WILLIAMS was formerly Miss Katherine KENNEDY, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lem KENNEDY."
On 23 Mar 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "Meadow Branch: Monday evening, Fred CHANCE took his wife up to the school entertainment in Kinmundy, and she and daughter, Emmalou, remained there overnight at the home of Mrs. Mattie CHANCE. When Mr. CHANCE returned home, he found the front room of their house full of smoke and the linoleum on the floor was burning slowly, but before he got the fire extinguished, it had burned the couch and an upholstered chair and a big hole on the floor."

On 11 Jan 1923, the Kinmundy Express has, "Burl Eugene, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn PARKER of O’Fallon, died at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. CHANCE of this city on Saturday morning at the age of 1 month and 22 days. The funeral was held at the J. R. CHANCE home on Sunday. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery."

Services will be held from the Methodist Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. She was a victim of tuberculosis. Besides her husband, she leaves 1 daughter, Eileen, and 1 son, Charles, her mother, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters."
On 12 Dec 1940, the Kinmundy Express has, "Lillian CHANCE PARKER, daughter of James R. and Mattie CHANCE, was born April 17, 1901, near Salem, and died Dec. 4, 1940 at the home of her mother, Mrs. Mattie CHANCE. She married April 21, 1922, to Glen A. PARKER, and they had 4 children, 2 dying in infancy. She united with the M.E. Church at a young age. She leaves her husband; 1 daughter, Eileen; 1 son, Charles, at home; her mother; 2 brothers, Fred and Seymour of Kinmundy; 2 sisters, Dorothy BOUSMAN of Kinmundy and Mrs. Mildred PRYOR of Oblong. One sister, Bessie, preceded her in death a few years ago. Services were held at the Methodist church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery."
