??? OWENS, born ?
I've seen no source for the names of James Baker and Mary (WHITTON) OWENS as being John's and William's parents, but some trees have them listed as the parents.
Neither John W. nor William M. named a son James, which would seem odd if ther father's name was James.
It is proven that John W. and William M. are brothers.
Sons of James Baker and Mary "Polly" (WHITTON) OWENS:
1. John W. OWENS, born circa 1800, North Carolina.
John married 1st Nancy SINGLETARY.
John married 2nd Mary SEAT.
(See #1 following)
2. William M. OWENS, born 1807/08, North Carolina. William evidently died circa 1854, Cumberland County, Illinois, after 4 Sep 1850 and before 1855 Illinois State Census.
William married Mary ARNOLD.

John W. Owens
of
Coles, Bond and Fayette Counties, Illinois
John W. OWENS, born 1799/1800, North Carolina. John died circa 1877, Ozawkie Township, Jefferson County, Kansas. (Note: John died after 1875 Kansas state census and before the 1880 federal census.)
John married 1st Nancy SINGLETARY 29 Aug 1824, Davidson County, Tennessee.
John married 2nd Mary "Polly" SEAT 1 Dec 1825, Davidson County, Tennessee. She was born 1801/02, Virginia. Mary died 21 Dec 1861, Bond County, Illinois.
By 1830, John and William OWENS settled in Coles County, Illinois, which later became Cumberland County. History of Cumberland County, Illinois Page 113. "In 1832, the work began on the Xational road through this county, and attracted settlements along its line. The road had been surveyed before this, but no work was performed on it here until about this time. Wm. C. Greenup had been connected with the engineer corps that laid out the road, and subsequently, in company with Joseph Barbour, took a contract to construct the bridge at or near the village which bears his name. Ira B. Rose, then a resident of Martinsville, in Clark County, found employment with him, and seeking to enter into a speculation at the same time, secured forty acres just west of the present village and built his cabin, subsequently platting a town. Barbour came from Louisville, and brought a stock of goods, but never was considered a permanent resident. Greenup had his residence in Vandalia, and the settlement at "Rosedale," while of some size, was chiefly made up of temporary sojourners, workers on the road. But among these were a few whose names are still familiar sounds in the county. Of these were the families of Lathrop, Ewart, Hazlewood and Vandike. About 1833, George Henson and David Henson, with Jack Houtchins, cut out the National road through this county, and settled at Woodbury. As early as 1831, George Woodbury had built his cabin here, but he made no improvements and did not own the land, though he gave his name to the village platted here. Thomas B. Ross, a native of Kentucky, came to this locality also about 1833, but two years later moved to the more thriving village of Greenup, but soon afterward returned. Levi Beal came down from Muddy Point in this year and kept a tavern. West of Woodbury was quite a strong settlement. Chipman Webster came in 1832, and settled on the National road about a mile and a quarter West of Woodbury, where he kept tavern, and about one and three quarters miles further west was Abram Marble. John and William OWENS, natives of Kentucky, were in this region as early as 1830, and James Mullen, a native of Ohio, in 1832; in 1834, the family of James Green, a native of Richmond, Va., about a mile west of Woodbury. D. B. Green was a lad of some five years when his father came first to the county in 1832. The family was then in Ohio, and his father brought some fine horses and a jack from Maysville, Ky., to Charleston, to sell. Young Green rode the jack while his father rode one and led three more. Selling these animals in this vicinity of the State, Mr. Green selected land in this county, and entered it, moving his family two years later. D. T." PAGE 170-171: "CHURCHES. The character of early society in Cumberland County was not such as to encourage the rapid growth of church influences. Many of these people were members of church organizations, but there were so many difficulties in the way of maintaining regular services that it was a good many years before it was attempted. Camp meetings were held as early as 1830, and scarcely a year passed without them. These were principally under the auspices of the Methodist Church, though all denominations attended and gave their support. Among the early settlers there was quite a strong Presbyterian element, who early secured the services of Rev. Hull Towar, a Methodist, and founder of Jewett. Among the other early preachers PAGE 171 in Cumberland County, were George Henson, _____ Halfacre, W. E. Smith and William OWENS. There were occasional itinerants of the pioneer order, whose manners were marked more by force than elegance."

William M. Owens
from
Tennessee
to
Cumberland County, Illinois
William M. OWENS, born 1807/08, North Carolina (Note: Parentage not proven at this time, but a brother is proven). William evidently died circa 1854, Cumberland County, Illinois, after 4 Sep 1850 and before 1855 Illinois State Census.
William married Mary ARNOLD circa 1830, Coles County, Illinois. She was born Dec 1811, Tennessee, daughter of Anderson and Phoebe (WARHURST) ARNOLD (See Arnold family, Chapter 2). Mary died Sep 1880, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Burial in Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
In 1829, what is now southern Coles County and northern Cumberland County, was in Clark County, Illinois. On 25 Dec 1830, Coles County was formed from Clark County and it included all of what would later become Cumberland County. On 2 Mar 1843, Cumberland County was former out of southern part of Coles County.

Valinda Melvin Owens
Conant
of
Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois
Valinda Melvin OWENS, born 27 Feb 1873 (according to family bible in her own writing), the daughter of George William and Margaret Frances (ATKINS) OWENS. Valinda died 8 Jun 1937, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Valinda and Eli are buried in Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Valinda married Eli CONANT 2 Ju11892, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, by Rev. W. N. GERARD. Eli was born 11 Oct 1870, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of John Berry and Mary Elizabeth (ATKINS) CONANT (See Chapter 5 of Conant Family) He died 14 Oct 1914, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Eli married Valinda Melvin “Vindy” OWENS, Valinda was
Margaret was the first cousin of Mary E. ATKINS, Making Eli and Valinda second cousins. Margaret was the daughter of Nathan and Mary (GARRETT) ATKINS. Nathan was the son of Bartlett and Mary (MORGAN) ATKINS. (See Morgan Family, Chapter 3 and Chapter 5, in files section of Sandy Branch Yahoo Group) Bartlett was the son of Martha "Patsy" (WHALEY) ATKINS, sister of Mary (WHALEY) JONES, the mother of the Foster Township Jones. Bartlett was the grandson of Bartlett Atkins, Revolutionary War Soldier from Virginia. Mary (GARRETT) ATKINS was the daughter of Moses "Squire" GARRETT, Esq. and Hannah (MORRIS) GARRETT. Moses was born in Georgia, the son of Thomas GARRETT. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas J. & Elizabeth "Betsy" (WHALEY) MORRIS. Elizabeth was the sister of Martha (WHALEY) ATKINS and Mary (WHALEY) JONES and Esther (WHALEY) PEPPER, who was the mother of Mary (PEPPER) CONANT. (See Chapter 1 of Conant Family)
Valinda, known by her relatives and friends as "Vindy", was only two years old when her mother died. She then went to live with her grandparents, Nathan and Mary (GARRETT) ATKINS. Her father remarried. She had two full brothers, William Elvin OWENS and Marvin OWENS, but Marvin died shortly after birth. William Elvin married Lucy A. HAYDEN and had five children: Valinda Elizabeth, George Wesley, Daisy Florence, Richard Cecil and Hannah Catherine. She also had a half-sister, Effa May “Effie” OWENS, who married Joseph FIELDS, and a half-brother, Abe OWENS. Abe married Elizabeth Boone GRAY, Eli's first cousin. (See Chapter 17 of Conant Family)
Eli had the privilege of growing up in a well-to-do family, his father being quite prosperous.
In 1892, Eli, having hear stories of the great west, he and Valind moved to Oklahoma City, Territory of Oklahoma. This was before Oklahoma was a state. It was still Indian Territory. After their marriage, Eli took his new wife to their new home in Oklahoma City. After living there for a few years and the birth of their first two children, their second child, Margaret Velma, was stolen by the Cherokee Indians. They found out where they were and traded Valinda's jewelry for Velma and immediately returned to Illinois. A hard lesson to learn, but it was Indian land. The American government had removed the Cherokee from their lands in the east and forced them to Oklahoma, then they allowed us to go in there and take over that land too. Not a positive point in our American history.
After returning to Illinois, Eli bought 220 acres of land on section 24 of Foster Township. The area was known as Sandy Branch. He bought the land from his brother, Ira CONANT (See Chapter 18 of Conant Family), who had a small home on the hill south of Sandy Branch Cemetery. The home consisted of two rooms. One being the bedroom and the other being the combined kitchen-dining-living room. Eli built a two-story addition on to the house. The new addition consisted of two bedrooms on the second floor, a parlor and two bedrooms on the first floor. Turned the old bedroom into a family room and divided the kitchen-dining room into two separate rooms. (This house was torn down in 2003 by then owner Danny PEDDICORD. It had been out of the Conant family since the early 1960‘s.) Eli also bought 55 acres of land in Kinmundy Township, adjoining the other land in Foster Township. The land was mostly timber and pasture, with gentle rolling hills, in as beautiful of a setting as one could find in the state of Illinois. He also built a very large barn and several out-buildings, making his farm as prosperous as his father's.
In 11 Jun 1900, the census shows Eli (28) and Valinda (28) CONANT living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Ellen age 3; Nellie age 2; and Willa age 1; and Ervin age 5 months. (Note: Wherever they got this information, obviously not from Eli and Valinda. All the children's info is totally wrong.SF) Eli owned his farm free of mortgage.
In 1906, Eli was elected School Trustee as a Democrat in Foster Township.
On 21 Apr 1910, the census shows Eli (39) and Valinda (38) CONANT living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Living with them were children Velma M. age 15; J. E. age 12; Nellie E. age 11; Ira M. age 9; and Geo. W. age 7. Eli owned his farm free of mortgage.
In 1914, Eli was elected Highway Commissioner of Foster Township, but died shortly after the election, three days after his 44th birthday. With the help of her two youngest sons, "Bish" and "Willie", ages 14 and 12, Valinda was able to payoff all Eli's debts and therefore was able to keep her home and land. Bish and Willie had to quit school and go to work. They cut down a lot of trees, made them into railroad ties, hauled them by wagon to the village of Alma, about 10 miles away. Therefore the Conant land stayed in the family.
On 22 Oct 1914, the Kinmundy Express has, "Eli CONANT Passed Away: Eli CONANT, son of John B. and Mary B. CONANT, was born in Marion Co., Ill., Oct. 11, 1870, and departed this life at his home in Foster twp., Oct. 14, 1914, heart trouble being the cause. He was 44 years and 3 days of age. On July 2, 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Valinda OWENS and to this union six children were born, three sons and three daughters: Mrs. Elma HARVEY, Mrs. Velma LAWRENCE, Mrs. Nellie ROBB, Elvin, Marvin and Willie CONANT, all living at or near the old home. He also leaves his loving companion, 2 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 5 sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. He was a good neighbor, a loving husband, a kind and affectionate father, well known by all as the greater part of his life had been spent in this community. The funeral services were held at his home six miles west of this city, on Friday morning at ten o’clock, conducted by Rev. J.W. WILLIS, interment in Sandy Branch cemetery."
On 30 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Valinda CONANT age 46, living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Living with her were her sons John Elvin age 22; Marvin Odell age 19; and George William age 17. Lists her as a farmer. She owned her farm free of mortgage.
On 8 May 1930, the census shows Valinda CONANT age 57 living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Living with her was her son Elvin age 32. (Note: The census shows Elvin as head of the household, but the census is wrong. Valinda was head until she died. She wasn't the type to let her son be head over her.SF)
Vindy was also known as a healer (some say a witch, but not black magic), using herbs, etc. But, she also was psychic. She would have visions. When her daughter, Velma. died, she saw six flames on the fence rail next to the house, suddenly, the second one when out. She knew exactly what it meant. It wasn't too long after that that someone drove up to the house. She said, "I know, you don't have to tell me. Velma is dead." She was also said to have magical powers.
After the death of Eli, Vindy lived out the remaining years of her life on the home place in Sandy Branch. She was a very particular person. She had to have the best of everything, especially in clothing for herself and well as her children. She was not liked by her sons and daughters- in-law, as she was a very difficult person, but she was greatly loved by her children.
Vindy became ill about fifteen weeks before her death. Her children, Willie, Nellie and Bish, along with their spouses, Grace, Mack and Lovell, had to take turns staying with her until she died. She could not be left alone. She died at the age of 65, outliving Eli almost fourteen years.
On 17 Jun 1937, the Kinmundy Express has, "Valinda Melvin OWENS CONANT, daughter of George and Margaret OWENS, was born Feb. 27, 1872 in Foster twp, and died June 8, 1937 at her home west of Kinmundy. At the age of 18 months her mother died, and she was taken into the home of her grandmother ATKINS where she grew to womanhood. She married Eli CONANT on July 2, 1892, and they had 6 children: Mrs. Elma HARVEY of Ridgefarm; Nellie ROBB, Elvin, Marvin, and William, all of Kinmundy; 1 daughter, Velma, died 2 years ago. She was a member of North Fork Church. On Oct. 14, 1911, her husband died, and she reared the children. During the past 15 weeks she has been bedfast. Her grandchildren were her pride and all neighbors and friends were always given a hearty welcome in her home. Besides the children, she leaves: 2 brothers, Elvin and Abe OWENS of Dexter, Mo.; the former having helped care for her during her last illness. 1 sister, Effie FIELDS preceded her in death. 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren also survive. Services were held from the home with interment in Sandy Branch Cemetery."

George William Conant
of
Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois
George William CONANT, born 18 Apr 1902, Sandy Branch, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of Eli and Valinda Margaret (OWENS) CONANT. (See Chapter 10 of Conant Family) He died 17 Mar 1958, from heart failure, at Memorial Hospital, Olney, Richland County, Illinois. He is buried in Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Bill married Grace BASSETT 24 Dec 1920, at the home of W. J. CHANCE, Justice of the Peace, which was located at the corner of Kinoka Road and McNicol Road in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. The best man was Odell Marvin CONANT, Bill’s brother. Lovell GREEN was the maid of honor.
Grace was born 14 Feb 1903, Bassett Homestead, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of Elmer and Maggie (McWHIRTER) BASSETT. She died 27 Dec 1979, St. Mary’s Hospital, Centralia, Marion County, Illinois. She is buried next to Bill in Sandy Branch Cemetery.
Grace was descended from the Pilgrims. Her line is as follows: “Master” William BASSETT came to America in 1621 on the ship “Fortune.” His son: “Mister” William BASSETT, his son: Colonel William BASSETT, his son: William BASSETT, his son: Nathaniel BASSETT married Hannah HALL, through whom descent from “Elder” William BREWSTER of the “Mayflower,” their son: Elisha BASSETT married Keturah WEST, through whom descent from “Master” Richard WARREN of the “Mayflower” and also Governor Francis WEST of Virginia who was the son of Thomas WEST, Lord Delaware and descendent of King Edward III of England. Elisha and Keturah’s son: Elisha BASSETT, Jr., his son: Harvey Foster BASSETT, settler of Marion county, Illinois and father of Elmer. “Master” William Bassett had the first library in America.
Bill was born into a good and prosperous family, but when he was only 12 years, his father died leaving him and his brother, “Bish”, to take care of their mother. Bill and Bish had to quit school to go to work. They cut down a lot of trees, made them into railroad ties and then hauled them by wagon to the Village of Alma, about 10 miles away. By doing that, they managed to pay off all their father’s debts so that their home and property would not be taken from their mother.
In 1920, after Bill and Grace were married, they bought a two-bedroom, four room house on the Kinoka Road, Foster Township, near the Kinmundy Township line. They lived there about five years. Their sons were born there.
By May 1927, they moved to the Village of Alma, Marion county, Illinois. There they rented a home with two bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, and a large living room. They lived there about two years. Their daughter, Betty, was born there. While living in Alma, Bill worked for the Wilson Poultry House.
By Dec 1929, they were living in the Claud RAINEY home, in Alma Township, which is where their daughter, Marjorie, was born. Bill had begun working in the oil fields, so he decided to move closer to his work. Bill also farmed while living there. They lived there about two years.
On 2 May 1930, the census shows George W. (28) and Grace (27) CONANT living in Alma Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Lyle E. age 8; Elmer D. age 4; Betty Lou age 3; and Marjorie E. age 4 months. They were renting their home. Bill was listed as a farmer.
By Jun 1932, they had moved back to Foster Township, as their daughter, Donna, was born there. Bill decided he needed to be closer to his mother. They moved into the Arnold home at Sandy Branch. They lived there for two years. Their daughter Donna was born there.
By Dec 1933, the had built their own place. Bill built a cottage that consisted of two bedrooms, a kitchen-dining room and living room. He built this on the Conant property on the bluff above East Fork Creek (of the Kaskaskia River). A beautiful view. Near this bluff was the Indian spring. The spring had wonderful soft spring water. A lot of Indian arrow heads were also found there. Their daughter, Monna, was born while living there.
On 27 Jan 1937, "This Indenture Witnessith, tht the Grantor, Ellsworth HARVEY and Elma HARVEY, his wife, Valinda CONANT, a widow, Nellie ROBB and S. M. ROBB, her husband, J. E. CONANT and Carrie CONANT, his wife, O. M. CONANT and Lovell CONANT, his wife, of the State of Illinois for the consideration of One Thousand and no/100 Dollars, Convey and Quit Claim to G. W. CONANT The Northwest quarter of the Southeast quarter and the North hone-half of the North one-half of the Southwest quarter of the Southeast quarter of Section Twenty-four (24), Township Four (4) North, Range Two (2) East of the Thrid P.M., situated in the County of Marion n the State of Illinois hereby releasing and waiving all right under and by virtue of the Homestead Exemption Lawas of this State. Dated, This 27th day of January A.D. 1937. Signed by Ellsworth HARVEY, Elma HARVEY, Nellie ROBB, S. M. ROBB, Valinda CONANT, J. E. CONANT, Carried CONANT, O. M. CONANT and Lovell N. CONANT." This was the Eli CONANT home place.
On 18 May 1950, the Kinmundy Express has, "Meadow Branch (from last week): Robert MARSHALL and little daughter, and mother, Mrs. Florence MARSHALL, went out to Sandy Branch Sunday morning, and called on Mr. and Mrs. Wm. CONANT, Mr. Elmer BASSETT, who has been so poorly, but is getting better slowly. They also stopped at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ank NICHOLS."
After the death of Bill’s mother, they moved into the Eli CONANT home. This was a nice home with a large barn and out buildings. Located on the hill southeast of Sandy Branch. The setting look much like that of the Walton’s home on the tv series. Bill was a carpenter. He was also an insurance man for Family Life and Mutual of Omaha Insurance. Bill was a hard working man, but it was not easy raising a big family during the depression.
Grace was born into the well-to-do Bassett Family. Although her father had plenty of money, he brought his family up to be hard working. They did not receive the benefits that most rich children received. Their father was a stern man and did not spend his money very freely on his family, although anyone in the community could borrow money from him. He did see to it that they lived in a nice home and were clothed well.
Grace attended the area’s country schools. Her main school was Pleasant Grove, commonly called Buzzard Roost, because of the many buzzards in the area. It later was known as Jones School. It was located on Jones Road in Foster Township, on the west side of the road between Kinoka and Sandy Branch Road. This was section 21. She also attended summer school at Sandy Branch School, which was located on Section 23 on Sandy Branch Road at the south end of Albert Lane (formerly known as Rabb’s Road). She received high grades and loved school. She wanted to go to high school, but her father would not pay for her to stay in town so that she could attend high school, even though he had the money to do so. She attended 8th grade twice just so she could have one more year of school. She taught school at Sandy Branch one summer before she was married.
In 1958, a newspaper clipping (name of paper and date not with the clipping) has, "George William CONANT departed this life March 17, 1958, Olney Hospital. He was born to Eli and Valinda CONANT in Foster township on April 18, 1902. He was united in marrige to Miss Grace BASSETT on Dec. 24, 1920. To this union were born four daughters and two sons, Lyle of Hillside; Dale of Alma; Betty SEE of Broadview; Marjorie JONES, Alma; Donna deceased; and Mona FRAKES, Edwardsville."
On 16 Jul 1960, Grace CONANT sold the Eli CONANT home place to Verne W. SCHOONOVER for the sum of $5,000.00.
After the death of Bill, Grace and her son, Dale, who was confined to a wheelchair, bought a home in Kinmundy on Porter Street, on the east end of town. She purchased the home from the estate of Margaret (ROPER)(SEE) GRAY (See #3 following). The home consisted of one bedroom and kitchen and living room. She had it built onto until it had two large bedrooms, a very large living room, a kitchen-dining room, a pantry, a bathroom, and a utility room. She also had a garage built. It was a very nice home. She lived in Kinmundy for several years, but she always missed the country.
In the fall of 1978, she sold her home and bought a mobile home. She had it placed on the Frakes property, next to her daughter’s home on the Kinoka Road in Foster Township. She was happy to be in the country again. She lived there until her death. She was extremely ill for about four months before her death. She was first at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, then St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia, where she died.
Bill and Grace adhered to no particular religion, although I had often heard Grandma Grace say that she had enough Baptist in her to believe such-and such. She was a good woman, wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to laugh and she had a smile that just made you happy when you saw her smile. I can still hear her laughing and see her smiling and smell the aroma of her freshly made homemade bread, homemade noodles and homemade chocolate pudding. She was a wonderful lady. A jewel. I was only six months old when Grandpa Bill died, so I never knew him.
Bill and Grace were both Republicans. Grace’s family was Republican, but all of the Conants were Democrat. Bill changed his politics to Republican. Grandma Grace said that some of Grandpa’s family blamed her for him changing, but she insisted that she had nothing to do with it.
Both Bill and Grace had their funerals at Linton’s Funeral Home in Kinmundy. Rev. Albert W. PERRY officiated at Bill’s. Rev. Russell FRY officiated at Grace’s. They are buried next to each other with the other Conants at Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
