John Louis McCARTY, born 4 March 1812, Tennessee, son of John and Margaret (McElyea) McCARTY. John died 11 Sep 1897, Marion County, Illinois. A tall, dark marble monument marks the graves of John Louis and Margaret. The Stipp Cemetery near Oskaloosa in Clay County, Illinois is the burial place of many Cutsinger, McElyea and Gammon families who came to Illinois with the McCarty family.
John married Margaret (CUTSINGER/KRUTSINGER) GAMMON 18 Jan 1834, Orange County, Indiana. (Marriage records, Orange County, Indiana, Book 2, Page 53) Margaret KRUTSINGER was born 15 May 1812, Green County, Tennessee, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth (SNIDER) KRUTSINGER. Margaret died 11 Feb 1894, Clay County, Illinois. Martin GRETSINGER/KRUTSINGER was the son of Michael and Elizabeth (SNIDER) GROTZINGER. Michael and Elizabeth married in Rockingham County, Virginia 22 May 1798. Michael was the son of John Cunrad and Anna (BRAUNGARTEN) GROETZINGER.
John Louis’ parents, John and Margaret, were married 14 Mar 1806, Davidson County, Tennessee.
In 1820, there were three McCARTY heads of household in Crawford County, Indiana. There was a John McCARTY, Abner McCARTY and William McCARTY. Crawford County is just south of Orange County.
Circa 1844, John Louis and family moved to Clay County, Illinois from Orange County, Indiana.
On 8 Aug 1850, the census shows John L. (38) and Margaret (38) McCARTY living in Northeast Township, Orange County, Indiana. They were both said to have been born in Tennessee. John was a farmer and his real estate was valued at $700. With them were: Elizabeth GAMMON age 18; Martha J. McCARTY age 15; William McCARTY age 13; Henry McCARTY age 12; Sarah McCARTY age 10; Mary C. McCARTY age 5; and Lucinda McCARTY age 2. All born in Indiana.
On 3 Sep 1860, the census shows John L. (48) and Margaret (48) McCARTY living in Meacham Township (Kinmundy Post Office), Marion County, Illinois. He was said to have been born in Tennessee and Margaret in Kentucky. Their real estate was valued at $1,600 and their personal property at $600. With them were: Mary McCARTY age 15; Lucinda McCARTY age 13; and Nancy McCARTY age 11. All born in Indiana.
On 26 Jul 1870, the census shows John L. (58) and Margaret (58) McCARTY living in Omega Township (Township 3 North, Range 4 East), Marion County, Illinois (Xenia Post Office). They were both said to have been born in Tennessee. John was a farmer. Their real estate was valued at $1,800 and personal property at $400.
On 19 Feb 1879, John Louis McCARTY from Marion County, Illinois purchased the East half of the Southwest quarter of the Southwest quarter (20 acres) and the south half of the Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter (20 acres), all in Section No. Eight (8) in the Town No. Three (3) North of Range No. Five (5) East of the third Principle Meridian from Edgar T. Moore (Songer Township in Clay County), Clay County, Illinois.
On 22 Jun 1880, the census shows John L. (68) and Margaret (68) McCARTY living in Songer Township, Clay County, Illinois. John was said to have been born in Tennessee. Margaret and her parents were said to have been born in Tennessee. John was a farmer. They lived near their daughter and son-in-law, Frederick and Nancy PICKLE.

Louis married Ida M. CRUTCHFIELD Oct 1903. She was born 13 Jun 1885, Meacham Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of John J. and Sarah Emeline (SMITH) CRUTCHFIELD (See Crutchfield Family). She died 14 Aug 1904. She is buried in Phillips Cemetery, Omega Township, Marion County, Illinois.
On 29 Oct 1936, the Kinmundy Express has, "Mr. Louis MULVANY, residing southeast of this city, was found dead in bed Sunday. At the inquest it was decided he died sometime during the night with a heart attack. Services were held from Brown Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Louis Hubert MULVANY, eldest son of Robert W. and Minnie E. MULVANY, was born in Omega twp. on June 26, 1883, and died Oct. 25, 1936. He married Miss Ida SCRUTCHFIELD in Oct. 1903, and her death occurred about 1 year later. He was again married to Louisa SLAGLEY on Nov. 29, 1905, and they had 3 children: Lois OUTLAW of Fisher, Ill.; Muriel TINSLEY of St. Louis, Mo.; and Maxine BROCK of Gibson City, Ill. He united with the Brown Christian Church about 1904, later transferring his membership to the Christian Church at Kinmundy. He leaves to mourn his wife, 3 children, 3 grandchildren, his father, 5 brothers, and 2 sisters. His mother and 1 grandson preceded him in death."

Lucinda married James Martin WANTLAND 14 Aug 1864, Marion County, Illinois. He was born Feb 1835, Tennessee. He died 3 Nov 1912.
In 1870, they were living in Iuka Township (Xenia Post Office).
In 1880, they were living in Alma Township with their four sons and James was listed as Martin V. Wantland.
In 1900, James was living in Alma, Marion County, Illinois with one of his sons.
In 1910, he was living in Alma Township with son James and daughter Katie.
On 7 Nov 1912, the Kinmundy Express has, "Elder School Express: Uncle Martin WANTLAND died at his home in this vicinity last Sunday morning at 11 o’clock after an illness of several weeks. He was a man that was held in high esteem by every man, woman and child in the community, and he will be greatly missed. The county has lost a good citizen, the family a loving father, and the neighborhood one of its most thrifty farmers. He has been a resident of the county a number of years and was one of the old landmarks.”

McCARTY, wife of Harry McCARTY, yesterday from the Christian Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. She died at her home in Alma Monday aged 72 years, 2 months, 17 days."
On 23 Aug 1951, the Kinmundy Express (Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois) has, "Harry McCARTY: Services were held Aug. 19th in the Alma Christian Church for Harry H. McCARTY, 77, who died in Salem Hospital Thursday. Bro. GHROST officiated with interment in Evergreen Cemetery in this city. Harry H. McCARTY, youngest of three sons of William and Rebecca HATTFIELD RUSH McCARTY, was born 2 miles east of Alma on Sept. 1, 1873. His boyhood and early life was spent on the farm where he was born, and farming continued to be his occupation for several years to come. He later engaged in the work of teaming and draying, after having moved to the village of Alma, and was for many years well known in this calling. He stayed with and cared for his aged parents until their deaths which occurred in 1912 and 1913, after which he continued to live alone in the family home in Alma. He married Mrs. Minnie SOUTHERS on July 4, 1934. She died in the spring of 1946. He had been member of the Christian Church in Alma for nearly 60 years. He died on Aug. 16, at the age of almost 78 years. Surviving are 2 step-daughters, Evelyn CHASE of St. Louis; and Clara CLARK of Champaign; two brothers, Frank McCARTY of Alma, and J. C. McCARTY of Kinmundy; and 1 half-sister, Sarah DEAN of Murphysboro."

On 27 Apr 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "On April 18, 1894, Miss Etta MARSHALL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Early MARSHALL residing north of Alma, became the bride of Jacob McCARTY, son of Mr. and Mrs. William McCARTY of Alma. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W.J. SIMER in his home in Omega twp. Immediately after their marriage, this couple took up their residence in Alma where the groom engaged in farming. A few years ago they purchased the farm east of Kinmundy where they now reside. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCARTY were born in this county and have lived here all their lives, and they have now reached the ages of 73 and 72 respectively. They have had 8 children, all living: Marshall of Iola; Burdette of Salem; Charles, Harvey, and Glenn of Kinmundy; Mary FAHRENBACHER of Olney; Helen MARQUART, Kenneth, and Velva PETIT, of Harvey; and they have 23 grandchildren. Last Sunday, this couple was surprised when their 8 children and most of the grandchildren came with well filled baskets to help them celebrate the 50th anniversary. The table was decorated with 50 yellow roses, and in the center a 3 tier cake with a gold leaf representing each child, and a yellow rosebud for each of the 23 grandchildren. "
On 18 Apr 1946, the Kinmundy Express has, "Etta MARSHALL McCARTY was born July 21, 1871, near Alma, only daughter of Early and Mary BASSETT MARSHALL. Her early childhood and girlhood was spent in the farm home of her parents north of Alma, during which time she finished the 8th grade in the nearby school of Meadow Branch, and later obtained more advanced instruction in the public school at Kinmundy. While in her youth, she became a member of the Christian Church at Alma. She married J. C. McCARTY on April 18, 1894, by the late Rev. Wm. SIMERS and this couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary nearly 2 years ago. 8 children were born, all of whom are still living: 5 sons, Marshall of Iola; Burdette of Salem; Charles of Harvey; Glen of Kinmundy and Kenneth of Harvey; 3 daughters, Mrs. Mary FAHRENBACHER of Olney; Mrs. Helen MARQUART and Mrs. Veva PETIT of Harvey. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild; 1 brother, Emory MARSHALL of Lewistown, Montana; and one half brother, Ira MARSHALL of Alma. During World War I, two of her sons, Burdette and Charles, served with the armed forces overseas, and during the recent was 8 of her grandsons served while 1 grand son-in-law lost his life in Germany. She died April 8 at Summers Hospital in Olney. Services were held from the Christian Church with interment in Evergreen Cemetery."

He has word that his son, Dale, who was recently inducted into the service, is suffering from pneumonia at a hospital in Little Rock, Ark., where he is stationed. Mr. and Mrs. McCARTY have 3 other sons in the service: Max in England, Rex and Lex in France."

For the past 2 years he has been employed by the Warren & Bradshaw Trucking Co. of Salem. Marjorie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl LINDER of Salem, attending grade school in Iuka, later completing her schooling at Salem. The couple will reside in Iola."

Rex Spencer McCARTY, born 11 Jul 1921, Effingham County, Illinois, son of John Marshall and Ethel (PHILLIPS) McCARTY. Rex died Wednesday, 25 Jul 2007, South Seminole Hospital, Longwood, Florida. Funeral at the Neal Funeral Home in Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois.
Rex married 1st Jeanette DOWNING 1946. Jeanette died in 1960.

On 28 Jan 1937, the Kinmundy Express has, "Rex McCARTY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marshall McCARTY, and a student in Iola High School, returning from school Monday afternoon in company with other boys, was walking in the street. When Rex went to step out of the way of an approaching car, he stepped directly in the path of the car, was ran over, and dragged a distance of 30 feet. The driver of the car, Mr. Russell ZIMMERMAN, a teacher in the high school, with the help of the other boys lifted the car from Rex, who was unconscious. The extent of his injuries are not yet known. His sister, Juna Rae, who was with him at the time of the accident, is also suffering greatly from shock and fright."
On 17 Aug 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "First Lieut. Rex McCARTY, son of Marshall McCARTY, of Iola, Ill., returned to Reception Station No. 9 after 31 missions and 221 combat flying hours against the enemy in 5 months overseas. He was among those who raided the French coast when our forces invaded on D-Day. He also engaged in shuttle raids to Russia and Italy. Most opposition was met on raids which made deep penetrations into Germany. He recalls a raid over Kiel as his most dangerous one due to adverse flying conditions. He is possessor of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 citations and European Theatre of Operations Award. A graduate of Kinmundy H.S., McCARTY was employed by Curtiss-Wright Corp. in Buffalo, N.Y. when he entered the service Sept. 10, 1942. Rex visited his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McCARTY and friends here last Wednesday."

HAMMOND died on Friday, January 2, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born in Alma on January 24, 1922. Graduating from Salem Community High School in 1940, she was a National Honor Society member. An accomplished pianist and organist, she played the pipe organ at the Salem First Chritian Church as a young adult, and also taught piano and gave tap dancing lessons. She was a secretary for the first female Marion County Superintendent of Schools, the office manager for the CR Hettel Jewelry Company, and the Hadley Dean Glass Company in St. Louis, Missouri. She retired in 1992 as Administrative Assistant at the St. Louis, Missouri, Postal Data Center. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Belleville, Women of the Moose Chapter 53 (Belleville/Swansea), and the Moose Ladies Red Hat Society. Survivors include: a daugher, Pamela HAMMOND of St. Louis, Missouri; a son, Steve McCARTY and wife Carolyn of Belleville; a granddaughter, Teresa HORVATH and husband Brian of Millstadt; grandsons, Christopher, Matthew and Lucas McCARTY of Belleville; a great-granddaughter, Madylin HORVATH of Millstadt; a brother Keith McCARTY and wife Virginia of Lubbock, Texas; a sister-in-law, Juanita McCARTY of Paxton; and many loving relatives and friends. Despite these trials, her parents, Otis Paul and Arline, moved to Salem, where they started a successful pipe and supply business which flourished throughout the 1950's and 1960's. The business was eventually closed after her father died and her mother could no longer handle its rigors due to age and health problems. Juanita, however, learned from her parents' entrepreneurial spirit and started many successful businesses, mostly in the antique area. She and her partners owned antique shops in Savoy, Champaign and Monticello. Also, she and her husband, Morris, ran a variety of antique flea markets and antique shows. The most notable was located in Lincoln Square for many years after Morris's death and Juanita's decline led to this business being sold as well. During the time of Juanita's business ventures, she also played the role of a traditional housewife to her husband and children. She prepared the meals and home and participated in all of the children's extracurricular activities, spending most of her summer days and nights at various ball fields throughout the Champaign metro area and neighboring towns. Survivors include: her sons, Kevin and Tim; grandchildren, Michael, Megan, Max, and Jake; and great-granddaughter, Kesa. Memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin, 355 Dundee Ave., Elgin, IL 60120."

Ida married 2nd Frank GAMBLIN 30 Sep 1930.
On 3 Jan 1920, the census shows Otho (23) and Ida May (21) PERKINS living in Clovis, Curry County, New Mexico. He and his parents were said to have been born in Texas. Ida was said to have been born in Kansas and her parents in Illinois. Otho was a Locamotive Switchman. With them were their children: William N. PERKINS age 2 years and 7 months, born Texas; and Janell M. PERKINS age 1 year and 4 months, born New Mexico. They lived next to his parents, William H. (53) and Mary A. (43) PERKINS.
On 15 Apr 1930, the census shows the widowed Ida M. PERKINS age 31, living at 1611 Taylor Street, Amarillo, Potter County, Texas. She was said to have been born in Kansas and her parents in Illinois. She was an Operator at City Hall. With her were her children: Billie PERKINS age 12, born Texas; and Martha J. PERKINS age 11, born New Mexico. They were living with Ida's widowed mother, Maggie J. McCARTY age 65.
