The Ancestry
of the
Holsaert
Hulse / Hultz / Hults
Family
Netherlands to America
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
The name has gone through changes in this country. From Holsard and Holsaert in Holland to Hulse, Hultz and Hults in America. Census takers spelled the names as they sounded to them. Sometimes the people themselves didn't know how to write, therefore we have members of the same family with different spellings of their name. The Marion County, Illinois branch of the family ended up with the spelling of HULTS.

Of Johannes HOLSAERT and Johanna HAVENS, four surviving children, three, Johannes, Anthony, and Margarita remained in the New York City and Long Island area. The youngest, Benjamin, moved to Freehold, New Jersey. There to raise a large family.

WILSON, in the north part of town and had been brought to the depot in a buggy to take the train to go home. She got out of the buggy on the crossing between the tracks and NIRIDER’s Drug Store and was going to the depot when the accident happened. The local freight was standing on the south bound main track and the train had been cut in two so as to leave the crossing open. The north end of the south half of the train was standing over the sidewalk and just as Mrs. WILSON was crossing behind this car the engine struck the cars and caused them to move north about four or five feet, and the bumper struck the aged lady in the side, knocking her down in the middle of the track with her head to the north with the car coming upon her. She was dragged from the track by Burgess BOLES of Alma and J.C. LAMBORN of this city, who happened to be close at hand when the accident occurred. I twas indeed a very close call and had the train backed a few feet farther she would have been crushed to death and probably cut to pieces. Her son, W.G. WILSON, arrived just as she was taken from under the end of the car and she was taken to the waiting room and he accompanied her to Alma and she was taken from the depot in a carriage. At this time it can’t be told whether or not her injuries are serious, but she is suffering with her hip, arm and side."

At Wiley's death his heirs were listed as: Sarah HAMMER (not a minor), Sarah J. ROBESON (minor), and Amanda HAMMER (minor). I know who Amanda is, but I do not know who the Sarah‘s are. It is possible that Ellen had died and he remarried a Sarah and that she had a daughter Sarah. Wiley had a daughter named Sarah, but she would have still been a minor at his death. His daughter, Rebecca, was living at his death and she is not mentioned. Rebecca would have only been 7 years old. Elizabeth, if living would also have been a minor. John HAMMERS, Jr., Wiley's brother, was listed as administrator for Wiley’s estate.
Wiley and Ellen had at least four children. Ellen named her first two daughters after her mother, Sarah (MOUNT) HULSE and after her step-mother, Rebecca (BURK) HULSE.

In the first few years they had 3 boys: Luther, Carl, and Irl, but they welcomed a baby daughter in 1893 named Laura Pearl. In 1904, the small house was replaced by a large commoditious home, where they have since lived. The grandmother died about 20 years ago, and the family circle was broken again on Aug. 19, 1925 when Luther, their oldest son died. He left a wife and 4 children. In vivid contrast to that quiet wedding was the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary held Oct. 16, 1932. A table of 50 feet was spread on the lawn, with a cake weighing 35 pounds, being 3 graduated layers, the lower one 18 inches in diameter. 250 guests enjoyed the sumptous dinner which included 31 plates of chicken, 40 cakes, and pies galore - no evidence of depression there. After dinner, Mr. BENKE of Salem took a picture of the family. Mr. Frank NELMS entertained with music on the guitar, and Mrs. Pearl KLINE with piano music. The couple have reached the ripe old age of 77 and 70 years."

She was married to John W. Basom on October 18, 1882, and to this union was born four children, one son, Luther, having passed on in 1925. Her husband passed away on October 20, 1938. Mrs. Basom's illness has been almost five years duration. She was a woman of sterling worth and character, kind and helpful to all her friends and neighbors and always stood unwaveringly for what she thought was right. Her children will remember her walking in the "straight and narrow way." That will be their heritage. Her earth's work is ended, a well-earned rest is won. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Pearl Kline, who, with her family, reside at the parental home, and who has untiringly and tenderly cared for her mother for several years; two sons, Carl and Irl, of Salem; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. "Sometimes when the day is ended, and the duties I was given to do are done, I shall watch at life's western windows, the gleam of the setting sun. I shall fall asleep in the twilight as I have never slept before, to dream of the beautiful city 'till I waken to sleep no more. There will fall on my restless spirit a hush, Oh, so wondrously sweet; and I shall cross over the river to rest at my Master's feet."

Luster LeGrand Hults
of
Marion & Will Counties, Illinois
Luster LeGrand HULTS, born 4 Sep 1851, Alma Township, Marion County, Illinois, son of Samuel and Malinda (PRUETT) HULTS. He died 10 Mar 1944, Manteno, Illinois. Luster and Fanny are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois.
Luster married Mary Frances "Fanny" SEE 28 Oct 1874. She was born 25 Oct 1854, Corydon, Iowa, daughter of Frederick and Virginia (BARNETT) SEE (See The See Family, Chapter 9). She died 21 Mar 1923, Kinmundy Township, Marion County, Illinois.
On 24 Jun 1880, the census shows Lester (28) and Mary F. (25) HULTS living in Kinmundy Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was their daughter Hessey HULTS age 1, born IL.
In 1892, the Plat Book of Marion County, Illinois shows L. L. HULTZ with 80 acres of land.
On 18 Jun 1900, the census shows Luster L. (48) and Mary F. (45) HULTS living in Kinmundy Township, Marion County, Illinois. Lester owned his farm free of mortgage. With them were their children: Tressir HULTS age 21, born IL; Ethel V. HULTS age 9, born IL; and Ruby HULTS age 6, born IL.
On 2 Dec 1909, the Kinmundy Express has, "Tuesday night a horse and buggy belonging to L. L. HULTS was stolen from the hitch rack in front of the Christian church. No trace of it has been found."
On 9 Dec 1909, the Kinmundy Express has, "Horse Thief Captured: On Tuesday night of last week L. L. HULTS had a horse, buggy, and harness taken from the hitch rack in Kinmundy and on Friday the entire rig was found in Finch’s livery barn in St. Elmo, and Henry C. MORGAN, the fellow who sold the rig to FINCH was landed in the Salem jail. MORGAN passed through here a few days prior to this theft with a horse and buggy that he tried to sell to several parties here and when he arrived at Salem he sold the entire outfit to Sam DAVIDSON. After he had sold the rig he went to the telephone and talked to a lady friend at Xenia and during the conversation he is said to have told her he would be over in a few days. According to MORGAN’s story he returned to his home near Shelbyville after selling the rig in Salem and spent a few days, then he returned to this city and got the HULTS rig and drove to St. Elmo arriving at that place about daylight Wednesday a.m. At St. Elmo he traded the HULTS horse for another horse and drew $20 and then sold the second horse for $10. On Friday MORGAN was captured by acting deputy Sheriff RUSSELL in Xenia and brought to Salem and placed in jail where he made a full confession of the disposed of both rigs, but he claims he did not take either of them. He says another fellow took HULTS’ rig from the rack and delivered it to him in the north part of town, and he also claims that he belongs to a bunch of fellows and the others got in debt to him and are paying him off in horses. This is a pretty good story to tell but what the jury will think of it we are unable to say, but it looks as if MORGAN was facing about two terms in the penitentiary. Mr. HULTS went to St. Elmo Friday night and got his stolen property arriving home early Saturday morning. Marion county offers a reward of $100 for the arrest and conviction of a horse thief and Mr. HULTS offered an additional reward of $25 and we understand the same reward was offered for the Shelbyville rig. If this is the case Deputy RUSSELL made $250 and at the same time probably put a stop to some more deeds of the same nature."

Holsaert-Hulse-Hultz-Hults Family of Pike County, Ohio and Marion County, Illinois
Holsaert
Hulse / Hultz / Hults
Family
vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
The name has gone through changes in this country. From Holsard and Holsaert in Holland to Hulse, Hultz and Hults in America. Census takers spelled the names as they sounded to them. Sometimes the people themselves didn't know how to write, therefore we have members of the same family with different spellings of their name. The Marion County, Illinois branch of the family ended up with the spelling of HULTS.
