Ancestry
Taken from The Hines Family, by David Gail Hines, "The HINES family were of Welsch descent and were early residents of Virginia, among whom was Richard in 1640; Thomas and William of Nansemond R. in 1653. William HINES of Sussex County, first appears in the records of Surry County, Virginia, in 1718. He was granted land on the south side of the Asomossick Swamp in 1723. His wife was said to be Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas GROSS of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. William and Elizabeth had eleven children, presumably all born in Virginia. All of them must have lived to maturity (at least as perceived in those days) since all eleven married. One of their sons, Joshua, is my fifth great grandfather. Records are not complete or precise, but we know that Joshua was born in Sussex County, Virginia, about 1721. He married a girl named Sarah, and they had five children, among them Lewis, born about 1748 in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia. Lewis' uncles Peter and Richard had moved from Virginia to Edgecomb County, North Carolina and was living in Nash County in 1790 acccording to that year's census. Nash and Edgecomb counties adjoin, so he may have known about conditions in North Carolina from visits to his uncles. All we really know is that in 1802, he deeded land to his son, Hartwell HINES Jr. Lewis had a brother named Hartwell presumably after whom Hartwell Jr. was named. This third great-grandfather of mine also decided to move on as his father Lewis had done before. In 1832 or '33, Hartwell moved with his family to Illinois: his last child, Melissa, is recorded as being born in Illinois in 1835, and her nearest oldest sibling, Frances HINES, was born in North Carolina in 1825."
