    Philip COPPLE, born 1783/84, Rowan County, North Carolina, son of Jacob Peter and Elizabeth (GARREN) COPPLE. Philip died 28 Jul 1850, Washington County, Indiana.

      Philip married 1st Anna Patsy WRIGHT 15 Dec 1804, Wayne County, Kentucky. She was born 1787, Randolph County, North Carolina, daughter of Amos and Elizabeth (LOWE) WRIGHT. Patsy died 17 Jul 1833, Washington County, Indiana.

      Philip married 2nd Elizabeth REED 20 Oct 1836, Washington County, Indiana. She was born circa 1788, Washington County, Indiana.

      Philip married 3rd Catherine HANGER 15 Nov 1842, Wayne County, Indiana. She was born 1793/94, Pennsylvania.

      In 1820, the census shows Philip COBBLE living in Washington County, Indiana.

      In 1840, the census shows Philip COPPLE living in Posey Township, Washington County, Indiana.

      On 5 Sep 1850, the census shows Phillip (66) and Catherine (56) COPPLE living in Posey Township, Washington County, Indiana. With them was Rachel COPPLE age 12, born Indiana; and George HAUPER age 62, born Pennsylvania. Philip was born in North Carolina. Catherine was born in Pennsylvania. Philip was a farmer. His real estate was valued at $800.00.

    Levi COPPLE, born 1815/16, Indiana, son of  Philip and Anna Patsy (WRIGHT) COPPLE. Levi died 1896, Sullivan County, Indiana. Levi and Lucinda are buried in Liberty Cemetery, Sullivan County, Indiana.

      Levi married Lucinda HARMON. She was born 1815/16, North Carolina. Lucinda died 28 Mar 1871, Sullivan County, Indiana.

      On 7 Aug 1850, the census shows Levi (34) and Lucinda (34) COPPLE living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. With them were their children Violet COPPLE age 15; Elizabeth COPPLE age 13; Mary COPPLE age 11; Newton COPPLE age 8; Martha COPPLE age 5; and Melvina COPPLE age 1. Their real estate was valued at $200.00.

      On 7 Aug 1860, the census shows Levi (44) and Lucinda (44) COPPLE living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. With them were their children Newton COPPLE age 18; Martha COPPLE age 16; Malvina COPPLE age 11; and Catherine COPPLE age 9. Lucinda was born in North Carolina, everyone else in Indiana.       On 1 Jun 1880, the census show the widowed Levi COPPLE age 63 living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. With him was his son William COPPLE age 19. They were farmers. Levi's parents were said to be from North Carolina.

Meacham & Omega Townships, Marion County, Illinois

 

 

      Newton COPPLE, born 11 Jan 1842, Sullivan County, Indiana, son of Levi and Lucinda (HARMON) COPPLE. Newton died 4 Dec 1920, Meacham Township, Marion County, Illinois. Newton and Mary are buried in the Phillips Cemetery, Omega, Marion County, Illinois.

      Newton married Mary E. (SHERROW/SHARROW) DURNILL/DARNELL 28 Jun 1866, Indiana, by M. G. J. W. WOLFE. She was born 19 Feb 1847, Washington County, Indiana, daughter of William and Sarah "Sallie" (SILL) SHERROW/SHARROW. Mary died 29 Jan 1927, Farina, Fayette County, Illinois. In 1850, the widowed Sarah SHARROW was living in Salem, Washington County, Indiana with her children Reuben age 13; James age 9; Sarah age 7; Lydia age 5; and Elizabeth age 3. Sallie's 2nd husband was Elisha WOOD. In 1870, they were living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana.

      On 10 Oct 1864, Newton COPPLE enlisted into Company E, 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment Indiana of the Union Army during the Civil War.

      On 10 Oct 1865, Newton COPPLE mustered out of military service.

      On 3 Aug 1870, the census shows Newton (28) and Mary E. (22) COBLE living in Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana. With them were James M. COPPLE age 7; and William L. COPPLE age 1 month, born in July. All said to have been born in Indiana. (Note: James M. is Mary's son by her 1st husband. His name should be James M. Durnill or Darnell.) Their real estate was valued at $1,200.00. Their personal property was valued at $460.00.

      On 1 Jun 1880, the census shows Newton  (38) and Mary (33) COPPLE living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana with Mary's twice widowed mother Sallie WOOD age 62. Also with them were Newton's and Mary's children William COPPLE age 10; Albert COPPLE age 7; Samuel COPPLE age 4; and Dora COPPLE age 1. Also living there was Mary's son James DURMILL age 18. All born in Indiana except for Sallie. She was born in Kentucky. Her father was born in Pennsylvania. Her mother was born in South Carolina. Mary's father was born in Indiana.

      On 30 Mar 1883, Newton COOPLE purchased 40 acres in Omega Township, Marion County, Illnois.

      On 4 Jun 1900 the census shows Newton (58) and Mary (53) COPPLE living in Meacham Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was their widowed daughter Dora ROBERTSON age 21, born Feb 1879, IN. Also with them was thier son and wife, Samuel T. (23) and Carrie A. (29) COPPLE. Also with them was their niece Grace B. COPPLE born Apr 1897, IL. And also with them was Mary's widowed mother Sallie WOOD age 81, born Sep 1818, Kentucky. Newton was born Mar 1842, IN. Mary was born Feb 1847, IN. Samuel was born Aug 1876, IN. Carrie was born Mar 1871, IL. Carrie was said to have given birth to 1 child, still living. Samuel and Carrie had been married 2 years. Mary had given birth to 7 children with 5 living. Sallie had 1 child still living. Newton was a farmer and he owned his farm free of morgage. (Note: Grace was their granddaughter, not niece.)

      On 12 May 1910, the census shows Newton (68) and Mary E. (63) COPPLE living in Meacham Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them was their divorced daughter Dora L. ROBERTSON age 31. Newton was a farmer and owned his farm free of morgage.

      On 13 Jan 1920, the census shows Newton (77) and Mary E. (72) COPPLE living in Farina, Fayette County, Illinois. Also with them was their daughter Dora L. ROBERTSON age 40. They owned their home free of morgage. Newton was retired.

      On 5 Jan 1921, as the widow of Newton, Mary filed for a pension for Newton's military service during the Civil War.

      On 8 Jul 1943, the Kinmundy Expess has, "The COPPLE Reunion was held in Farina, July 5, at the home of Mr. Wm. COPPLE. It was the birthday of Wm. COPPLE, and his 4 brothers and sister were all present. The oldest member present was 80 years old and the youngest 64. Everyone came with well filled baskets. Those present were: James DARNELL, Miss Dora COPPLE, Mr. and Mrs. A. N. COPPLE, Mrs. Chas. PERRY, Joan ABERNATHY, Mrs. Elberta ABERNATHY, Mr. and Mrs. Hershel COPPLE, Mr. and Mrs. S.E. STOCKLEY, and Mrs. C.A. BOONE of Kinmundy."

    William Levi "Will" COPPLE, born 6 Jul 1870, Sullivan County, Indiana, son of Newton and Mary E. (SHERROW/SHARROW) COOPLE. Will died 24 Sep 1962, Okawville, Washington County, Illinois.

      William married 1st Venia LAWRENCE 5 Jun 1893, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 5 Dec 1876, Illinois. She died 24 May 1937, Farina, Fayette County, Illinois. Buried at Phillips Cemetery in Omega Township.

      William married 2nd Bertha Lee (HAMILTON) PERRY Mar 1939. She was born 2 Dec 1884, Garrison, Kenucky, daughter of G. W. and Mary Ellen (___?___) HAMILTON. Bertha died 4 Sep 1944, Salem, Marion County, Illinois.

      On 1 Jun 1900, the census shows William (29) and Vena (22) COPPLE living in Farina, Fayette County, Illinois. William was born Jul 1870, Indiana. Vena was born Dec 1877, Illinois. They had been married 7 years. They had no children. William was a farmer. He was renting his farm.

      On 8 Jan 1920, the census shows Wm L. (49) and Vena (42) COPPLE living in Farina, LaClede Township, Fayette County, Illinois. With them was their daugher Leta COPPLE age 13. They owned their home free of morgage. William was the night watchman for the Village of Farina.

      On 12 Apr 1930, the census shows William L. (59) and Vena (52) COPPLE living in Farina, Fayette County, Illinois. They owned their home, valued at $600.00. William was a machinist at the saw mill.

      On 3 Jun 1937, the Kinmundy Express has, "Brown: Mrs. Len KUNTZA and Mrs. Lou MULVANY attended the burial services Wednesday of Mrs. Will COPPLE at Phillips Cemetery. Camp Ground: Mrs. Wm. COPPLE died at her home in Farina last Monday. Interment was in Phillips Cemetery."

      On 7 Sep 1944, the Kinmundy Express has, "Bertha Lee HAMILTON COPPLE, daughter of G.W. and Mary Ellen HAMILTON, was born Dec. 2, 1884, at Garrison, Ky. She came to Illinois in 1900. She married Wm. PERRY on May 10, 1904, who died June 10, 1935. In March 1939, she married Wm. COPPLE of Farina who survives her. She was a member of the Christian Church. She is survived by 3 children, Harold of Butler; Guy of Kinmundy; and Goldie, wife of S. E. STOKELY of Salem; 2 step-sons, Charles of Kinmundy; and Noah PERRY of Davenport, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Dave ISHMAE and Mrs. Harry COLLIER, of Worthington, Ky., and Mrs. C.A. BOONE of Kinmundy; and 2 brothers, Alex HAMILTON of Iuka; and Sheridan HAMILTON of Mich. Services were held from the Christian Church in Kinmundy with interment in Evergreen Cemetery."

    Albert Newton "Bert" COPPLE, born 10 Apr 1873, Sullivan County, Indiana, son of Newton and Mary E. (SHERROW/SHARROW) COOPLE. Albert died 30 Dec 1953, Illinois. Burial in the Phillips Cemetery, Omega Township, Marion County, Illinois.

      Albert married Anna B. "Annie" BLAIDES 14 Aug 1894, Clay County, Illinois. She was born Feb 1880, Illinois. Annie died 6 Apr 1961, Gary, Lake County, Indiana. Burial in the Phillips Cemetery, Omega Township, Marion County, Illinois.

      On 23 Jun 1900, the census shows Albert (27) and Annie (20) COPPLE living in Omega Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children May COPPLE age 4, born 1896; Bertha COPPLE age 3, born May 1897; and Clyde age 9 months, born Aug 1899.

      On 20 Apr 1910, the census shows Albert (37) and Annie (36) COPPLE living in Omega Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Mary COPPLE age 14; Bertha COPPLE age 13; Clyde COPPLE age 10; Hazel COPPLE age 8; Albert COPPLE age 6; and Mabel COPPLE age 4. Albert and Annie had been married 16 years. Annie had given birth to 7 children with 6 living.

      On 13 Jan 1920, the census shows Albert N. (46) and Anna (39) COPPLE living in Meacham Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Clyde COPPLE age 20; Hazel COPPLE age 18; Albert COPPLE age 16; Mabel COPPLE age 14; and Hugh COPPLE age 9. They owned their home free of morgage. Albert was a farmer.

      On 20 Feb 1930, the Kinmundy Express has, "Camp Ground: A surprise party was given in honor of Anna COPPLE’s 50th birthday Friday night."

      On 3 Apr 1930, the census shows Albert N. (56) and Annie (50) COPPLE living in Meacham Township, Marion Coutny, Illinois. With them was their son Hugh COPPLE age 19. Also with them were their granddaughters Mildred M. PERRY age 15; Fern E. PERRY age 12; and Louise L. PERRY age 10.  Albert was 21 and Annie 14 when they married. They owned their home. Albert was a farmer.

      On 24 Nov 1932, the Kinmundy Express has, "Meacham: Miss Mildred PERRY, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert COPPLE, and Mr. Melvin WHITE were married Saturday in Kinmundy."

      On 14 Apr 1938, the Kinmundy Express has, "Camp Ground: Mr. Bert COPPLE spent his 65th birthday Sunday. Several neighbors and friends served a nice dinner for him."

      On 28 Jul 1938, the Kinmundy Express has, "Meacham: Mr. Paul PERRY and Miss Louise PERRY, a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert COPPLE, were married last Thursday. That evening they were given a rousing charivari at the home of his mother, Mrs. Myrtle PERRY."

      On 16 Mar 1939, the Kinmundy Express has, "Camp Ground: The wedding bells rang but again in this community when Maggy PERRY became the bride of Bill COPPLE of Farina. They were married by a Justice of the Peace at her home, where their friends had gathered and made a big supper for them. Attending the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Guy PERRY, Mr. and Mrs. Neal FERRELL, Mr. and Mrs. Jack PHILLIPS, little James LEWIS, Jr. and Dall FERGUSON."

      On 3 Nov 1939, the Kinmundy Express has, "A very quiet wedding was performed Saturday in the Methodist parsonage when Miss Olga WEISS became the bride of Mr. Hugh COPPLE. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Olga WEISS residing east of this city and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert COPPLE, also residing east of this city. The couple will reside on a farm 4 miles east of Kinmundy. Meacham: Mr. Hugh COPPLE and Miss Olga WEISS were married Saturday morning at the Methodist parsonage in Kinmundy. They will live on the groom’s farm. Monday evening, a group of friends and relatives gathered at their home to charivari them."

      On 4 Jan 1940, the Kinmundy Express has, "Booker: Mr. A.N. COPPLE’s house was burned Tuesday, it being a complete loss."

      On 10 Oct 1940, the Kinmundy Express has, "Meacham: Bert COPPLE and family met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh COPPLE, Thursday and held a family reunion. Several relatives from a distance were present."

      Clyde married Dorothy F. BLACK. She was born 1905/06, Tonti Township, Marion County, Illinois, daughter of George Wesley and Dora A. (MARTIN) BLACK.  Dorothy was the sister of Nellie who married Albert, brother of Clyde (See #4-2-5 following)

      On 12 Sep 1918, Clyde's Military Registration Card has, Clyde Newton COPPLE age 19, born 24 Aug 1899. Was living in Kinmundy, Marion County, Illinois. He was a farmer. He was single. His nearest relative was his father Albert COPPLE also of Kinmundy. Clyde was tall and slender with brown eyes and hair. 

      On 11 Apr 1930, the census shows Clyde (35) and Dorothy (23) COPPLE living in East Chicago, Lake County, Indiana. With them were their sons: William COPPLE age 5; and Donald COPPLE 1 year and 4 months. Also with them was Clyde's brother Albert COPPLE age 26, who was single. The adults were born in Illinois and the children in Indiana. They were renting their home at $26.00 a month. They owned a radio. Clyde and Albert worked at the oil refinery.

      On 25 May 1933, the Kinmundy Express has, "Clyde COPPLE, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert COPPLE, residing southeast of this city, was killed Sat. afternoon in a explosion while working in a Standard Oil Refinery at Whiting, Ind. His co-worker was killed with him. The bodies were blown a great distance and were burned beyond recognition. He was 33 years, 7 months, and 26 days old. The deceased lived with his family in Hammond, Ind. The wife was formerly Miss Dorothy BLACK, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George BLACK, residing north of this city. They have 2 sons. The remains were brought here, and services held Wed. from the M. E. Church with interment in Phillips Cemetery in Meacham twp."

      On 2 Jan 1936, the Kinmundy Express has, "Shirley, the second son of Samuel and Carrie COPPLE, was born in Meacham twp. on Jan. 11, 1909, and died Dec. 24, 1935 at Salem. Shirley spent most of his life where he was born, moving with his parents to Salem some 10 years ago. He attended school at Camp Ground until the age of ten years, when he became afflicted and was unable to walk. All that loving hands and medical skill could not relieve him of his affliction. He leaves his parents; a sister, Mrs. Grace BUTTS of Alma; 3 brothers, Herschel and George of Salem, and Denny at home. 2 sisters preceded him in death. An aged grandmother, Mrs. Harriett BURKETT, and a number of uncles and aunts survive. Services were held at Booker Church with interment in Phillips Cemetery."

      Herschel married Mildred Irene COMBS 1928, Salem, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 23 Feb 1911.

COPPLE on Nov. 17, 1928, in South Bend, Ind., and he preceded her in death on Sept. 18, 1974. She later married Claude CANTRELL on Oct. 15, 1977, in Salem, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1996. She is survived by two daughters, Anna Mae WOOLDRIDGE of Marion and Patricia J. ERICKSON and husband Arthur of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Lana GRESHAM and husband Rodney, Anita BUSSE, John ERICKSON and Artie ERICKSON, Jr.; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a dear niece, Glenda VURSELL SWEATT of Albuquerque, N.M. In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dana WOOLDRIDGE HARMON, in 1980. She was a homemaker. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Rankin Funeral Home with Phil MARTIN officiating. Interment will follow at Paradise Cemetery in Salem. Friends may call form 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials in her honor may be made to the charity of the donor's choice and will be accepted at the funeral home."

      Goldie's ancestry: Albert JOURDAN was the son of Dr. Joseph and Sarah Harriet (BLACKBURN) Jourdan, M.D. Sarah Harriet was the daughter of Andrew Thomas "Andy" and Frances "Fannie" (EDDINGS) BLACKBURN. Fannie was the daughter of John James and Elizabeth (WEAVER) EDDINGS. Elizabeth WEAVER was the daughter of David WEAVER, born Sharp Mountain Creek, Cherokee County, Georgia. David WEAVER was a Cherokee Indian. He died 29 Dec 1835, at the age of 105.

      Effie May SCOTT was the daughter of Thomas and Rebecca (FAIRN) SCOTT.

      George was a retired engineer for Union Pacific Railroad after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Salem Church of God and also attended the Grace Church of the Nazarene.

      Dora married James Marshall ROBISON 6 Jul 1898, Illinois.

      On 31 Dec 1953, the Kinmundy Express has, "Dora ROBISON Obituary: Dora T. COPPLE, daughter of Newton and Mary COPPLE, was born Feb. 14, 1878 in Sullivan Co., Ind. At the age of 4 years she moved to Illinois. Dora was married to James Marshall ROBISON on July 6, 1898, also in that year she was baptized and received as a member of the Church of Christ, and remained a member throughout her life. She made her home with her parents until their passing, then she and her half-brother, James, resided together here until his death in 1952. She then made her home with Mrs. Mary TOLLEFSON. She died at Salem Hospital on Dec. 24, 1953. She leaves 3 brothers: William COPPLE of Farina, Bert COPPLE of Kinmundy, and Tilden COPPLE of Salem. Services were held Saturday from the Linton Funeral Home, Bro. Harold BURNSIDE officiating. Interment in Phillips Cemetery."

      Philip married Lucinda MOORE 23 Apr 1847, Fountain, Indiana. She was born 15 Feb 1824, Sullivan County, Indiana. Lucinda died 23 Aug 1879, Sullivan County, Indiana.

    Corda M. HANGER, born Oct 1872, Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana, daughter of Jacob and Mahala Ann (COPPLE) HANGER. Corda died 5 Mar 1947, Farmersburg, Indiana. Aunt Corda and Uncle Frank are buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Farmersburg, Sullivan County, Indiana.

      Corda married Joseph John Franklin "Frank" FRAKES Dec 1889. He was born Nov 1865, Vigo County, Indiana, son of William and Martha Ann (McGLONE) FRAKES. He died early 1942. He was 76 years old. 

      Frank took his nephew, William Philip FRAKES (See Chapter 16 of Frakes Genealogy) from the orphanage, only after he was old enough to work on the farm. He was very hard on him. Corda was a very nice, caring person and treated Willie like he was her own. William Philip FRAKES moved to Salem, Marion County, Illinois, where he raised his family. After Uncle Frank died, Aunt Corda moved into Farmersburg. She rented the farm to a Bet and David.

      On 9 Jun 1900, the census shows John F. (34) and Corda M. (27) FRAKES living in Curry Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. John was born Nov 1865. Corda was born Oct 1872. With them was John's nephew, William P. FRAKES age 10, born Mar 1889. John was listed as a carpenter. They owned their farm with a morgage. They lived next to John's father. (Note: William P. FRAKES settled in Salem, Marion County, Illinois.)

      On 21 Apr 1910, the census shows John F. (44) and Cordie M. (37) FRAKES living in Farmersburg, Sullivan County, Indiana. John was a carpenter. They owned their home free of morgage.

      On 15 Jan 1920, the census shows John F. (54) and Corda (47) FRAKES living in Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana. John was a farmer.

      On 25 Apr 1930, the census shows Frank (65) and Cordia (57) FRAKES living in Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana. Frank was a farmer.

      I have a couple of letters written to my grandfather, William Philip FRAKES, from Aunt Corda. She always signed her letters Mom.

      Mary married Joseph A. McGLONE 23 Dec 1866, Vigo County, Indiana. Joseph was born 27 Jan 1842, Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana, son of John and Hannah (AKERS) McGLONE.

      Joseph married 2nd Mrs. Ann J. (HANGER) WHEELER. She was born 22 Oct 1844, daughter of William and Mary (COPPLE) HANGER. Two children by Ann, Walter McGLONE, born Sep 1886; and Ira McGLONE, born Dec 1887.

      Joseph married 3rd Martha E. ___?___ . (Note: I believe Martha is Martha E. (COPPLE) RAILSBACK. Name, age and number of living and deceased children all fit. (See #3 following)

      On 17 Oct 1864, Joseph enlisted into the 8th Indiana Battery. He was in Chattanooga, Tennesse when the war ended, serving as Steward.

      On 19 Jul 1865, Joseph McGLONE mustered out of service.

      On 4 Aug 1870, the census shows Joseph A. (28) and Mary E. (19) McGLONE living in Linton Township, Vigo County, Indiana. With them were their children Jacob L. age 1; and Ida May age 1 month. Joseph was a farmer. Their real estate was valued at $1,000.00. His personal property was valued at $593.00.

McGLONE, who married Amanda's sister Mary Eliza COPPLE.
