Capt. John Chilton
of
Westmoreland County, Virginia
and
Fauquier County, Virginia
John CHILTON, born 29 Aug 1739, Westmoreland County, Virginia, son of Thomas and Jemima (COOK) CHILTON (See Chapter 2, #1-4). John died 11 Sep 1777, in the Battle of Brandywine.
John married Letitia BLACKWELL 10 Apr 1768, Fauquier County, Virginia. She was born 3 Oct 1750, Fauquier County, Virginia, daughter of Col. Joseph and Lucinda "Lucy" (STEPTOE) BLACKWELL. Letitia died 10 Dec 1775, Rock Spring, Fauquier County, Virginia.
John served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolutionary War and died in the Battle of Brandwine. He was said to have been a hero. His diary is in a book titled, "Fauquier County In The Revolution," by Russell and Gott. His diary ended 9 Sep 1777, 2 days before his death.
Great Things Are Expected From Virginia -- (Virginia Historical Society - 428 North Boulevard, Richmond, VA 23220) "In the summer of 1776, George Washington's Continental Army was in a tough spot. The British had landed on Long Island in late August and were advancing on New York City. What Washington needed most was more soldiers. Virginia responded by sending the 3rd Virginia Infantry, the Old Dominion's first contribution of regulars to Washington's army. Captain John CHILTON, a thirty-eight-year-old farmer from Fauquier County, was among those who traveled north with the unit. "Great things are expected from the Virginians," he explained to his father-in-law,"and of consequence we must go through great fatigue & danger." The regiment arrived in New York on September 13 and joined the portion of Washington's army defending Harlem Heights, north of the city. British forces on Long Island were plainly visible to CHILTON and his men. "We lie in sight of the enemy's encampments … and can see the belches of fire from their cannon at every discharge." Three days later, on September 16, British and American troops collided in the no-man's-land at the base of the heights and fought a sharp skirmish. The 3rd Virginia took part, advancing under orders from Washington himself. During the brief but spirited fight, Capt. CHILTON and his men "made about four fires." The fighting soon ended, and the Americans successfully prevented the British from moving up the hill in what became known as the battle of Harlem Heights. CHILTON wrote a letter the next day describing the battle. He summed up the regiment's performance by stating that "our men observed the best order, no quitting their ranks tho' exposed to a constant & warm fire. I can't say enough in their praise, they behaved like soldiers who fought from principle alone." A month of inactivity followed while both armies sought to recover from the recent fighting and decide what to do next. In a quiet moment, John CHILTON reflected that "Mankind when engaged in Warfare are as wary & timorous of each other as Deer are of Men." Following the battle of White Plains, N.Y., in late October and British movements in November, Washington's army retreated into New Jersey, and the 3rd Virginia formed part of the army's rear guard. By the end of the month, Chilton's spirits were low as he poured out his frustration over the condition of the Continental Army in a letter to his brother Charles. "You will wonder what is become of the great Army of Americans you have been told we had … I really can't tell." The 3rd Virginia spent much of the spring and summer of 1777 on picket duty in New Jersey. John CHILTON's letters chronicle his efforts to keep his men safe from smallpox and to maintain awareness of any British troop movements. During this time, his thoughts often turned toward home. "One more piece of news I have to tell you," he explained to a friend, "and that is I greatly want to see Virginia and its inhabitants. No country yet like old Virginia." To underscore his point, he complained in the same letter that the "women here [New Jersey] from 16 years old have lost their teeth." John CHILTON's war ended on September 11, 1777, when he was mortally wounded at the battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania. Propped up against a tree, he died watching his men fight a losing battle against a larger British force. John CHILTON's diary and several of his letters are in the manuscript collection of the Virginia Historical Society. They offer a fascinating glimpse of one Virginian's thoughts and experiences during the Revolutionary War."
The name of his plantation was Rock Springs.
Fauquier County was once part of Prince William County.

Charles married Elizabeth "Betty" BLACKWELL 19 Dec 1760, Virginia. She was born 1742.
On 27 Feb 1766, Charles signed the following Resolution, "Leedstown Resolves. "First. We declare all due Allegiance and Obedience to our lawful Sovreign George the Third, King of Great Britain; and we determine to the utmost of our Power, to preserve the Laws, the Peace, and good Order of this Colony, as far as is consistent with the Preservation of our Constitutional Rights and Liberties. "Secondly. As we know it to be the Birth-Right Privilege of every British Subject (and of the people of Virginia, as being such), founded on Reason, Law and Compact, that he cannot be Taxed but by Consent of a Parliment in which he is Represented by Persons of his own Chusing(sic), who themselves pay a Part of the Tax they impose on others. If therefore, any Person shall attempt by any Action or Proceeding, to deprive this Colony of these fundamental Rights, We will immediately regard him as the most dangerous Enemy of the Community, and We will go to any extremity, not only to prevent the Success of such Attempts, but to Stigmatise and Punish the Offender. "Thirdly. As the Stamp Act does absolutly direct the Property of the People to be taken away from them without their Consent express'd(sic)by their Representatives, and as in many Cases it deprives the British American Subject of his Right to Trial by Juries, We do determine, at every Hazard, paying no Regard to Danger, or to Death, that we will exert every Facility to prevent the Execution of the said Stamp Act, in any Instances whatever within this Colony; and that if any abandon'd(sic) Wretch, shall be so lost to Virtue and public Good, as wickedly to contribute to the Introduction or Fixture of the Stamp Act in this Colony, by using Stamped Paper, or by any other Means, we will with the utmost Expedition, convince every such Profligate, that immediate Danger and Disgrace shall attend their prostitute Purpose."signed: 27th day of February 1766 in Virginia, put our hands and seals hereto. Sarah Chilton Bassett
of
Jennings County, Indiana
and
Marion County, Illinois
Sarah CHILTON, born 12 Oct 1835, Jennings County, Indiana, daughter of Charles Thomas and ___?___ (___?___) CHILTON. She died 6 May 1907, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. (The newspaper says she died Sunday, 5 May 1907, not Monday the 6th.) She is buried next to Harvey in the Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. They have a tall monument on Harvey's grave, which is located on the very southern section of the cemetery. According to cousin Marvin BASSETT's history of the family, which he wrote in 1995, Grandma Sarah had light red hair, a ruddy complexion and freckles and that she was a bit taller than her husband, Grandpa Harvey Foster BASSETT.
Sarah married Harvey Foster BASSETT 14 Aug 1856, Jackson County, Indiana. They were married by William GILLUSPY, minister. They got their license on the 13th and were married on the 14th. Signed by Circuit County Clerk, Daniel H. LONG. Harvey was born 14 Jan 1820, Jefferson County, Indiana, son of Elisha, Jr. and Elizabeth (FOSTER) BASSETT (See Chapter 7 of Bassett Family in files section of Sandy Branch yahoo group). He died 20 Jan 1890, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. He is buried in Sandy Branch Cemetery, Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. His 1st wife was Mary SULLIVAN.
In 1858 on the 22 of April, Harvey moved his family to Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. There he bought his first land. He bought the SE1/4 of the NE1/4 of Section 22 (40 acares) and the NW1/4 of the SE1/4 in Section 22 (80 acres) and the S1/2 of the NW1/4 Section 23 (80 acres) for a total of 200 acres. He paid $2,000.00 in cash and paid the remaining $1,000.00 on 9 Nov 1860. He bought the land from Richard and Sarah VICKRY, who had bought it from the government. The Vickry’s had moved to Turrant County, Texas. This land had very little improvements and was practically a wilderness. All it had was a log cabin to live in.
On 26 Aug 1860, the census shows Harvey F. (40) and Sarah (23) BASETT living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Fosterburg Post Office. With thew were their children, Algin S. age 15; Mary C. age 11; and Sarah A. age 9; Arthina B. age 3; and Ancel H. age 1. Their real estate was valued at $2,000.00. Their personl property was valued at $500.00. All but Ancel were born in Indiana. Ancel in Illinois. Harvey was a farmer.
Soon the peaceful life of the farm had to be shattered. The southern states and the northern states began to have a hatred for each other. The issue of slavery was the instigating issue. Abraham LINCOLN was elected as the 16th President of the United states of America. Although the states were not so united. He was elected in 1860. On the 4th of February, 1861, representatives from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina met in a convention at Montgomery, Alabama, and founded a new government (the CONFEDERATE STATES of AMERICA). They were joined later by delegates from Texas. Jefferson DAVIS was made President, and Alexander H. STEPHENS was Vice-President. Later other states joined the Confederate States; North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas and Virginia. Virginia divided over this and the counties in the northwestern part of Virginia split and called itself Kanawha and was admitted to the Union two years later as West Virginia.
Harvey was not a slave owner and he did not believe in slavery. Illinois was not a slave state, but a few people had them in the southern part of the state. Harvey was a patriotic man and he believed what the United States of America stood for, being from an old New England family, so when the Civil War began, he was ready to fight in order to keep the nation from falling apart.
Harvey joined and was mustered into the United States military at Salem, Marion County, Illinois, 18 Sep 1862. He was in Company I of the 111 the Illinois Infantry. They remained at Camp Marshall in Salem until 31 Oct 1862, when it numbered 930 officers and enlisted men. Harvey and the 111th was camped in Kentucky when Harvey’s son, Algernon Sidney, caught up with him, after joining the same Company I. They began their trek through Tennessee, Mississippi and to Alabama. It was near Huntsville, Alabama where “Sid” was hospitalized with typhoid fever in 1864. Sid spent the remainder of the war in at least two other hospitals. One in Nashville, Tennessee and one in Mound City, Illinois. He was mustered out from the Army General Hospital in Mound City, Illinois.
Harvey continued in the army throughout the war. From Alabama he went to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and eventually to Washington, D.C.
Harvey was mustered out of service 7 Jun 1865 (although medical records show him being mustered out in July), in Washington, D.C. and took the train back home to Marion County, Illinois.
His medical records are as follows: Catarrh, 12 to 14 of November, 1862; Catarrh, 21 Jul to 23 Jul 1864; Rheumatism, 11 Apr to 5 May 1865; 8 May to 6 Jul 1865; and 8 Jul to 11 Jul 1865.
General Robert E. LEE surrendered to the Union Army on the mourning of Apr 1865. On 14 Apr 1865, President Abraham LINCOLN was shot in the head in Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. He died early the next morning. Vice President Andrew JOHNSON then became the 15th President of the United states of America. President Lincoln, doing what seemed like impossibility, brought our nation through its greatest trial since the American Revolutionary War. Lincoln's plan for forgiveness and restoration of the southern states died with his death. To this day a dislike ness is felt between the north and the south.
Life in Illinois was getting back to normal. Most all families had lost someone dear to them in the war, but they went on with their lives. The Bassett Family were most fortunate as both Harvey and “Sid” survived the war, and neither were wounded, although they fought in many battles
Harvey built a nice two-story"Saltbox" style home on his land just south of the log cabin. It consisted of two bedrooms upstairs and downstairs he had two bedrooms, a parlor and a combined kitchen-dinning room. He also had a large stock barn and several out-buildings. This house was built in front of the old log cabin. It was located on north and west side Sandy Branch Road where the curve of the road goes from south to west. This is west of Garrett Road. The house was torn down in the year 2000, after the property had been sold out of the family. A new smaller home is located there today.
In 1867 on the 27th of June, Harvey bought 80 more acres from Joseph C. and Martha WILTON for $1,000.00. It was NW1/4 of the NW1/4 Section 22 and SW1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 15 both in Foster Township. (F-69)
On 21 Jun 1870, the census shows Harvey BASSETT age 50 living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. Lester Post Office. With them were their children Ancil age 10; Lafayette age 9; Charles age 1; Sidney (25) and Ellen (21) BASSETT. Their real estate was valued at $4,000.00. Their personal property was valued at $800.00. Harvey was a farmer. (Note: They left Sarah out of the census.)
In 1876 on the 24th of February, Harvey bought 40 acres from Joseph and Ellen B. HANNUM. It was NW1/4 of theSE1/4 of Section 27 of Foster Township. It cost $245.00. (28-341)
In 1879 on the 3rd of October, Harvey purchased 40 acres from William C. DORRIS. It was the NE1/4 of the SW1/4 of Section 22, Foster Township. It cost $400.00. (24-521)
On 22 Jun 1880, the census shows Harvey S. (60) and Sarah (47) BASSETT living in Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. With them were their children Ancil H. age 20; Layfaett age 18; and Elmer age 8. Also with them was hired hand John WHEELER age 25.
In 1883 on the 22 December, Harvey purchased from his son, Sid, land in Section 23 of Foster Township for $100.00. (37-420) Sid moved to Cooke County, Texas with his family.
In 1884 on the 24 of June, Harvey once again purchased land. This time in section 23 from A. STONE. It was the SESESE1/4 in Foster Township for the price of $50.00. (W-300)
There were some other purchases but I don’t have the acreage listed. He owned around 400 acres of land in Sections 15, 22, 23 and 27 of Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Harvey and Sarah worked hard, as all Illinois farmers had to do, but they prospered and provided well for their children.
On 14 Feb 1890, the Centralia Sentinel has, “Harvey F. Bassett was born January 14, 1820, and died January 20 1890, aged 70 years and six days. He was twice married, his second wife surviving him. He served in the war of the rebellion in the 111th Illinois Infantry, and was at the time of his death a member of the Wm. A. Smith Post G. A. R. at this place. He was a man who was respected by all who knew him. Was an honorable, conscientious man, and kind neighbor and faithful friend, and his loss to the community is deplored by a large circle of friends, whose sympathies are with the bereaved wife and children.”
After Harvey's death, Sarah continued to live in the homestead. Her son Elmer lived there with her and he took over the farm. She applied for a pension, which she received because she was a widow of a Union Soldier of the Civil War.
In 1897, Sarah was visited by her daughter and husband from Oklahoma, James B. and Arthena Belle Altum. It is believed that when they returned home, she went with them.
On 27 Jun 1900, the census shows the widowed Sarah BASSETT age 64 living with her daughter and son-in-law, James B. (49) and Arthena B. (42) ALTUM in Township 5 South Range 2 West, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Living next to them was Oliver Harvey ALTUM and family (Sarah’s grandson) and Ancil Henry BASSETT (Sarah’s son). The census says Sarah wa born Oct 1835, Indiana. That her father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Virginia. The census records athat Sarah had given birth to 6 children with 4 living at time of census.
Sarah lived to see two of her children die, two of her grandchildren and one great-grandchild die. But also she lived to see 15 of her grandchildren born and six great-grandchildren.
On Thursday, 9 May 1907, the Kinmundy Express has, “Mrs. Sarah BASSETT, an aged lady residing about eight miles west of this city, died Sunday night after an illness of several months. The funeral service was held yesterday afternoon at two o’clock.”
Politically, Harvey was a member of the Republican Party. He held several township offices and took a great interest in politics. He was a member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church. The Bassett’s were a highly respected and a well known family, thus carrying on the great British name of Bassett.

John CHILTON, born circa 1711, Westmoreland County, Virginia, son of Mark and Sarah (KAY) CHILTON. John died 26 Mar 1744, Prince William County, Virginia, America.
John married Mary ___?___ .
John described himself as a planter of Prince William County, Virginia.
In Jul 1733, John CHILTON sold 764 acres of land to Richard BLACKBURN, which was land granted to his deceased father 15 Feb 1728.
In Sep 1733, John CHILTON sold another tract of land to Richard BLACKBURN, land that had been granted to John's father 24 Sep 1729.

On 26 Mar 1744, James TURNER gave bond for 50 as administrator of John CHILTON. The inventory of his estate was made 31 Mar 1744 and showed a valuation of 12.7.0.
A summary of what happened to this family might be helpful. It appears the family stayed close together until after the son, John CHILTON, died in 1767. Within two years, Charles and Thomas had moved south to Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia. The last mention of William was found in 1769. George died in 1771 and his wife eventually remarried. The oldest son, Mark Chilton, stayed until John's wife, Martha, died in 1772. By this time her children were old enough to take care of themselves. Mark had joined Charles and Thomas in southern Virginia by the following year. It appears that the children of John Chilton (died 1767) were the only ones who stayed in the area.
