Marion County Prisoner of Rebels
Kept Diary in Andersonville Prison
by C.A. Frazer
EDITOR'S NOTE - The Sentinel is indebted to members of the Altom family for this unusual account of life in Andersonville Prison during nine months of the Civil War. Mrs. Bill Epperson, 34 Ridge St., Centralia, provided the actual diary kept by her great-grandfather while he was in prison. Mrs. Lora Altom of Patoka, a daughter-in-law, provided the obituary printed in the Patoka newspaper in 1898 and her son, Robert of Roselle, Illinois, provided additional details.
Jesse Altom, the hero of this true story, was born Feb. 1, 1840, in Fayette County. The family moved to "the old homestead about 4 1/2 miles east of Patoka, after known as the R. S. Caldwell farm" and in 1861 he married Sarah Jackson.
On Aug. 9, 1862 he and other Patoka young men enlisted under Capt. Abner S. Gray and in due course were fighting in Kentucky and Tennessee. He took part in the battle of Lookout Mountain.
Altom was captured while serving under Gen. James B. McPherson, who was killed that same day, as the division was moving on Atlanta.
Finally released from prison, Altom served out the remainder of the war and on his return to Patoka opened a general store. He died July 22, 1898, at the age of 58.
Ninety-seven years ago today Jesse Altom of Patoka made his fourth attempt, with Confederate blessings, to leave Andersonville Prison and return to the Union lines. Like the preceeding three attempts, it ended in his return to prison.
An entirely new slant to life in the Confederate Prison, made infamous by post-Civil War authors of best sellers, is contained in the diary Jesse Altom kept while in prison. He finally made it to the Union lines, at Jacksonville, Fla., on April 28.
Dates and Movements
Unlike another Civil War soldier from the Patoka area, William A. Smith, whose letters home were the subject of a series of articles in The Sentinel last fall, Altom's diary entries were terse and largely without color, a log of dates and movements. His little leather-covered notebook, well preserved except for the cover, packs nine months of imprisonment into a dozen pages. He devotes as much space to a prison commander's order regulating prison sutler and a Confederate general's edict concerning prison riots as he does to his own predicament.
Altom gives almost a comic opera picture of the prison as a place where everone, including the guards, were trying to get the prisoner out instead of keeping them in captivity. "Capt. Wirz came to the prison and said if he couldn't deliver us to the Yankees at one place we would keep going until we found a Union commander who would exchange us," said Altom in his entry of April 2, 1865. The captain must have given it up as a bad job in spite of his brave words, because the long line of prisoners was back at Andersonville on April 13th.
Tells of His Capture
Altom-the diary does not give his rank or company - was most laconic about his capture. "The 111th was supporting a line of skirmishers on the 22nd day of July, 1864, about one mile east of Atlanta, Ga., when the Rebel foe charged us, capturing 85 of our regiment."
"We were marched five miles to the east, where we were guarded until the morning of the 25th and then started marching toward Griffin, Ga. On the 27th we were put on the cars and sent down to Macon, and then run over to Andersonville Prison."
The town of Andersonville, Ga., is a few miles north of Americus and about 25 miles southeast of Columbus. It now has a population of about 200 and is dwarfed by the national cemetery there which contains the graves of some 13,000 soldiers, most of whom died in the prison.
Almost immediately the Confederates started efforts to arrange an exchange of prisoners with the Yankees. the next entry in diary relates:
Arrange Prisoner Exchange
"On the 19th of September I left the prison and went for Sherman's lines for a special exchange but was sadly disappointed when we were turned back for prison. On the 24th we were lodged in the stockade at Macon, on the 25th we started for Savannah on the train and arrived there to join about 5,000 other prisoners. On the 12th of October we went on the cars to Millen, arriving after dark. I saw a prisoner shot dead for leaving the ranks to get some boards to make him a shanty."
Altom does not specifically say he was returned to Andersonville after this first attempt at prisoner exchange, however he mentions experiencing the first heavy frost on October 22 and reports the deaths of several companions (?illigible) ,James McCourtney,(?illigible)and R. M. Lambert.
His second try for release started November 21.
Raw Corn for Rations
"Two thousand of us left the prison and went to Savannah, changed cars and started for Blackshear. We arrived the night of the 25th. All we had for rations from Savannah was one quart of raw corn."
"On the first day of December 1,000 prisoners were called from our camp and paroled and taken out for exchange."
Apparently Altom was not one of the lucky one thousand because the next entry says:
"On the 5th, 1,600 of us left Blackshear for Thomasville where we took up camp in the piney woods. On the 19th we left Thomasville and marched towards Albany. We arrived on the 22nd and were put on the cars for Andersonville, where we landed on the 23rd."
Rebels Recruit in Prison
At this point in his diary Altom tells of the efforts made by Confederate officers to recruit prisoners into their army.
"January 23rd the recruiting officer came to our camp and took out 195 recruits for the Rebel Army and among those who left were Henry Clay, William Perdew, and J. W. Johnson. On the 28th he came back again and added about 200 to the Rebel Army, including about 50 of the 17th Iowa regiment."
By this time the Rebels perhaps could see the eventual outcome of the war because the diary mentions several instances of Confederate softness.
"On March 17, Col. Gibbs, commander of the prison, rode through our camp and told us not to be uneasy about an exchange because it would reach us, certainly within about three weeks. He showed us he was unarmed, which was an uncommon thing for a Rebel to come in the prison without his revolver."
The prisoner exchange started the next day, as Altom reported 960 prisoners boarded the cars for Jacksonville, Miss. March 24 another 800 left for Union lines of which 800 Altom said "135 had bought their way out. The first paid $20 and the last only $3 and finally down as low as 3 for $1"
Again Signs Parole
The Patoka Man's third try for exchange started March 27 when he and a fellow prisoner, W. B. Jones, signed the parole and headed for the railroad station. "We were marched back to camp however on account of some accident on the railroad, unknown to us."
"On the 29th we learned that the delay was caused by a small raiding party of Yanks on the railroad below Columbus, Ga."
A few days later the fortunes of war apparently had turned hard against the Confederacy because on April 2, 1865 Capt. Wirz arrived at the prison, entered the compound unarmed, and called for the division sergeant. "He told us we would be exchanged at Jacksonville, Fla. He said the Yankees wouldn't let any more of us get to Vicksburg and if he couldn't deliver us at one point we would try another as we were bound to be exchanged someplace."
Head for Union Lines
The Rebels put 4,000 prisoners under parole April 3, and lodged them in the stockade. The next morning they "took 1,100 of us, put us on the cars and we landed at Albany, 40 miles away. We marched three miles and camped."
The next day, Altom's diary records, the prisoners and their guards left camp at daybreak and marched 18 miles, much of the time wading slough with water up to their hips. "Little did we care for mud or water while going for an exchange."
The role of prisoner and guard must have ended with signing of the paroles, because Altom notes that "the next night S. Paleston and I went out in the country and paid $3 per dozen for eggs." He does not mention where Union soldiers who had been in prison for months, got $3.
Prisoner Spirits High
There was a noticeable lift in spirits as this trip wore on. His words are almost gay as he tells of leaving camp when the sun was about an hour high and that the column marched as fast as the puny and lame could travel. He is sensitive to the wonders of spring, mentioning rye in full bloom, corn large enough to plow, oak leaves that are green and, a good old country expression, "peaches as large as bluebird eggs."
The march ended April 9 in camp near Thomasville, made during a heavy rain. The next morning was a dreary one. Along with the mud and discomfort of a soldier's wet bivouac was the news they would have to return to Andersonville. "Our government will not receive us until the 19th. It was sad news, indeed."
Back to Andersonville
Travelling on short rations of bacon and hard bread the weary line of prisoners retraced the route to Albany and back on the cars for prison which by this time must have seemed like home.
At this point in Altom's narrative the situation becomes confused. "I was then detailed as wardmaster in the general hospital. I had 40 patients and 7 nurses."
Rebel Guards Demoralized
Rumor of a large Yankee raiding party apparently demoralized the Rebels. "on the evening of the 17th the prisoners in the stockade were removed on the double quick for fear of a raid. On the morning of the 18th the Rebs chopped and broke up all of their artillery. Rebs were going in every direction toward the swamps, the worst demoralized set of men I ever saw in my life."
Jesse Altom signed his last parole April 18, took the cars for Albany and the 19th found him with 50 other ex-prisoners, marching without guards, at the head of a long column of prisoners, walking the familiar route to Thomasville where they boarded the cars again for Live Oak, Fla. He mentions that a boy from the 16th Illinois Infantry fell off the train and was killed on this trip.
The next day the column moved on to Lake City, Fla.. Apparently the prisoners had complete liberty as Altom mentions he and Davey went into the Florida swamps and some of the boys killed an alligator nearly 7 1/2 feet in length.
Met Union Soldiers April 28
At dusk on April 28 the column was met by Union soldiers on the outskirts of Jacksonville and "It was the happiest time of my life when they received us with open hearts and open arms. We got rations of all kinds, with whiskey and tobacco thrown in to boot."
So ends the Altom diary except for excerpts from a general order issued by the commander of prisons regarding riots and escape attempts among prisoners and which stated:
"The brigadier general commanding directs that all prisoners of war who conduct thenmselves in orderly manner shall be treated with that humanity becoming the Christian people of the Confederate States who, notwithstanding the barbaric atrocities inflicted upon them by a cruel and merciless foe, have not yet learned to formers under this control. Signed, Brig. Gen. J. D. Imboden."

James B.Altum
of
Cooke County, Texas
and
Marshall County, Oklahoma
James B. ALTUM , born 8 Dec 1850, Franklin County, Missouri, son of Spencer Stephen and Melvina (PARKS) ALTOM/ALTUM. Jim died 12 Dec 1902, Oakland, Indian Territory (now Marshall County, Oklahoma). Jim died of heart failure. James is buried at the Oakland Cemetery, Oakland , Marshall County Oklahoma.
James married Arthena Bell BASSETT 27 Sep 1874, Patoka, Marion County, Illinois. She was born 16 Oct 1857, Jackson County, Indiana, daughter of Harvey Foster and Sarah (CHILTON) BASSETT (See Bassett Family, Chapter 8). Bell died 1 Dec 1918, the Mossville area, Cooke County, Texas. Buried in Red River Cemetery, Cooke County, Texas. Bell's grandparents were, Elisha, Jr. and Elizabeth (FOSTER) BASSETT, and Charles Thomas and ___?___ CHILTON.
Bell married 2nd Alexander H. "Alex" SCOTT 9 Oct 1907, Chickasaw Nation, Oklahoma. Alex wasborn 8 Feb 1849, son of James M. and Sarah (CANE) SCOTT (James and Sarah are buried in Dye Cemetery, Cooke County, Texas). Alex died 9 Apr 1924. He is buried next to his 1st wife, Fances M. "Frannie" SCOTT in Red River Cemetery, Cooke County, Texas.
Bell was reared on her father's farm in Foster Township, Mrion County, Illinois. She attended the country school there. During the Civil War, her father and her brother, Sid, fought for the Union. Fortunately, they both returned home safely after the war.
Bell was born in a log cabin, but by the time she married, her father had built a saltbox style home, where she lived very comfortably with nice furnishings.
Jim was eight years old when his parnts moved to Foster Township, Marion County, Illinois. The lived about 5 miles east of Patoka on the old stage coach route, the Salem-Vandalia Road. There he attended Chance School and grew to manhood.
After Bell and Jim were married, they lived in Patoka, Marion County, Illinois.
In 1876, the spring following the birth of their first child, they, along with his parents, his sister and brother-in-law (Mr. & Mrs. Fenton CALDWELL), set out for Texas.
On 1 Apr 1876, they arrived in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas. From there they took wagons to Stephens County, Texas.
In Aug 1876, they moved from Stephen's County to Cooke County, Texas. There they settled at Cross-timbers, which was later called the Dye Community, near Woodbine.
Jim and his brother, John "Jack" ALTOM, had a merchantile business in Woodbine. When the railroad went through Gainesville instead of Woodbine, the town declined as did their business.
In Aug 1877, Jim's brother-in-law, Fenton CALDWELL, died at the age of 35.
On 16 Jun 1880, the census shows J. B. (29) and A. B. (22) AULTUM living in Precinct 1, Cooke County, Texas. With them were their children Oliver age 4, born in Illinois; Chas. age 3, born in Illinois; and Lulah age 1, born in Texas. Jim was listed as a farmer.
On 17 Mar 1882, Jim's father, Spencer ALTOM, died at the age of 60.
On 7 Sep 1883, Jim's mother, Hannah ALTOM, died at the age of 67.
On 2 Oct 1883, Bell and Jim's precious little daughter, Lula May ALTUM, died. They were terribly grieved. (Note: This little girl's doll was in the possession of Agnes Altum Elkins and then to her daughter Margaret Elkins Plumlee. A porcelain doll with a beautiful little dress. They kept it in a glass case for show.)
In Jan 1890, Jim's brother, John P. "Jack" ALTOM, died at the age of 44.
Following all of these deaths, they decided to move. They moved to the prairie, near the SCOTT family. There they remained for 7 years. They became very good friends of the SCOTT's. Jim farmed while they lived there.
In Jun 1897, they sold their farm and moved to Indian Territory, locating near Moore, Indian Territory (now Cleveland County, Oklahoma). They were still living there in Mar 1898.
At some point they moved to Oakland (now Marshall County, Oklahoma), as he was in the dairy business there with his son Harvey ALTUM.
On 4 Mar 1898, the Marion County Democrat has on their front page, "Scenes of His Childhood. While alone my mind runs back to my boy-hood days of 40 years ago, when in Old Marion County, for it was about that time I landed there. I lived there abour 19 years. My father, Spencer ALTOM, bought a farm 5 miles east of Patoka, on the road running to Salem. It was there that I lived and passed the happiest days of my life among relatives and friends, going to the Chance school house house to school; but where are now my school-mates of those days? There are but few left to tell the tale. Some sleep beneath the sod to await the final judgement; others have done as I have done, gone to remote places. It was in Marion Count that I took unto myself a wife. September 27th, 1874, I wedded Miss A. B. BASSETT, and in the spring of 1876, in company with my father, brother and brother-in-law, I departed for Texas, leaving behind many friends whom I have nto since seen. We landed in Sherman, Texas on the first day of April and there took wagons for the far west. We located in Stevens county and remained there till August. It being very dry there, we returned to Cook county and settled in Cross-timbers. In August, 1877, my brother-in-law, Fenton G. CALDWELL, died. March 17, 1882, my father departed this life, and on the 7th of September, 1883, my mother, Hannah ALTOM, crossed Jordan's river. January, 1892, my brother, John P. ALTOM, was called hence. And so half of the older ones have crossed the chlly watters of death. After the departure of these dear relatiaves, I sold my little farm in the timber and moved to the prairie and there lived 7 years, forming many new acquaintances and friends. In June, 1897, I sold my property there and moved to Indian Territory, where I now am. Here I find people who formerly lived in the various States of the Union; they are generally poor, and I have found this section the best in the land for such people. We have an abundance of grass, wood and water, and the soil very fertile and productive. It produces well, wheat, oats, corn, cotton, vegetables and melons. One can purchase land here on time payments. I don't meant that one can actually owne lnad here, but in the near future such will be the case. We have a gtood market; Moore isour nearest railrod pont; from it 48,000 bales of cotton will be shipped. It has a flouring mill, electric plant, 2 national banks; population about 4,000, good schools and churches. It had a commodious court house, but it was burned last fall. The jail is large and just now has 90 inmates; hence all are not obeyors of the law. I will be pleased tohear from any of my old Marion County friends. My postoffice address is, Hewitt, Indian Territory. James B. ALTOM."
On 12 Oct 1899, the Salem Republican says, "Mr. and Mrs. James ALTOM, formerly of Marion County, are now located at Woodward, Oklahoma."
In 1900, Jim and Bell took their sentimental journey back to their childhood home of Marion County, Illinois. There they were able to visit Jim's relataives in Patoka adn then to stay at Bell's childhood home with her brother Elmer, his wife, Maggie, thier first child, Gage, as well as her mother, Sarah. It must have been exciting for Bell to see her family again. There were photos taken of this visit. The family photograph includes Jim and Bell (BASSETT) ALTUM; Elmer and Maggie (McWHIRTER) BASSETT and thier son Gage; LaFayette and Illinoi (ARNOLD) BASSETT and their sons Harvey and Clyde; and of course the matriarch of the family, Sarah (CHILTON) BASSETT.
On 27 Jun 1900, the census shows James B. (49) and Arthena B. (42) ALTUM living in Township 5 South, Range 2 West, Chickasaw Nation County, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). With them was Bell's widowed mother Sarah BASSETT age 64. They lived next to Bell's brother and family, the Ancel Henry BASSETT's. Also living next to their son and family, the Oliver ALTUM's. Jim was listed as a farmer. They were renting their farm.
On 12 Dec 1902, Jim died of heart failure in Oakland, after being in poor health for some time. Bell remained in Oakland, living with her son, Harvey ALTUM, and his family. In the mean time, Mr. Scott's wife also died. When he found out that Jim had died, he called on Bell.
In 1907, Alex called on Bell and on his third calling, they were married in Harvey's home. Her grandchildren hated to see her leave. They lived her so. She was especially close to Agnes.
Bell took the carriage and Alex took a wagon. They loaded all of Bell's things and left for Texas. They moved to Sivells Bend, Cooke County, Texas, near the Red River. It was there that Bell reared Alex's last four sons, William Lee (26 Jan 1884 - 7 Apr 1917), Walter Henry, Lester and Arthur E.. She worked very hard and did every thing for them as if htey were her own sons. The Scott boys grew up loving her very much. Their descendants recall hearing about how wonderful a person she was. Alex's oldest son was Leonard (6 Apr 1881 - 24 Sept 1933).
Alex's parents came from Lawerence, Tennessee, about 45 miles south of Nashville. The Scott family was originally from Scottland. They were sent as political prisoners to America in 1771. When the Civil War broke out, some of hte Scott family sold out and moved to Canada, where some of the family still lives today. The Scotts who remained in Tennessee became Confederate soldiers. They were large land owners and were slave owners. After the war they moved to Cooke County, Texas.
Politically, Jim ALTOM was a Republican, being from a family of northern Republicans. Alex SCOTT was a Democrat. All of Bell's family were Republicans. Her sister-in-law, Illinoi (ARNOLD) BASSETT, was a cousin of President Abraham LINCOLN.
In religlious matters, Bell belonged to the Church of Christ. She was not reared in any denomination, the BASSETT's being from teh old Pilgrim Church, and the only church services in the area were Methodist-Episcopal. Bell was reared with strong morals. She was a very good person and was loved by everyone who came into contact with her. Her children, brothers, friends and neighbors all loved her. She spread a little sunshine to everyone she met.
On 18 Apr 1910, the census shows A. Harry (60) and Bell (52) SCOTT living in Precinct 1, Cooke County, Texas. With them were Alex's sons Walter age 20; Lester age 17; and Arthur age 13. All the boys were born in Texas. Alex was born in Tennessee. Bell was said to have been born in Indiana. The census said that Bell had given birth to 3 children with only 1 living at time of census. Alex and Bell had been married for 2 years.
In 1913, Bell's niece died, she took her niece's youngest daughter, Amy HAFFORD, and reared her until she was able to attend school. Amy was the granddaughter of Algernon Sidney BASSETT.
In 1918, Bell, who was ill at the time, went to see her son, Harvey, who was also very ill. She came home from the trip even more ill. About three days later she recieved the news that Harvey had died. She got out of bed and went outside and made a wreath for Harvey's funeral. She then went back inside to bed and died a few days later.
Even though Aunt Bell died years before I was born, I feel like I know her from stories of those who did know her. I have heard nothing but praise for her; how she cared for others, putting everyone before herself; how she cared for her home and her flowrs. She must have been a truly great lady.
Aunt Bell's Obituary in the Gainesville Newspaper, "MRS.BELLE SCOTT DIES IN MOSSVILLE COMMUNITY. Mrs. Belle SCOTT, aged 62, wife of A. H. SCOTT. residing near Mossville, this county, died at the family home Sunday afternoon. Mrs. SCOTT was a most excellent woman and highly esteemed, her family being one of the most prominent in the community. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock, under direction of Geo. J. CARROLL of this city. Mon. 2 Dec. 1918." I don't have the date of the newspaper clipping.
Red River Cemetery is located on private property in the north-central part of Cooke County. From Hwy 82, it is 7 1/2 miles north on FM 1201, then east 1/2 mile. The cemetery is about 400 yds. on the right.

Oliver Harvey ALTUM, born 20 Jul 1875, Patoka, Marion County, Illinois, son of James B. and Arthena Bell (BASSETT) ALTOM/ALTUM. Oliver died 26 Nov 1918, Sivells Bend, Cooke County, Texas. Harvey is buried in Red River Cemetery, Sivells Bend, Cooke County, Texas.

In 1876, Harvey moved to Texas with his parents when he was just a babe.
Harvey was a hard working man, a trait he inherited from his parents. He went into the dairy business with his father in Oakland, Oklahoma.
On 27 Jun 1900, the census shows Oliver H. (24) and Lora B. (18) ALTUM living in Township 5 South, Range 2 West, Chickasaw Nation County, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). Also with them was their daugher Agnes C. ALTUM age 1. Harvey was listed as a farmer. They were renting their farm. Bell had given birth to 2 children with only 1 living at time of census.

To be close to his mother and other relatives, Harvey moved back to Cooke County, Texas.
Harvey was a humorist. he was well liked by his neighbors and friends. He was very much involved in rural community affairs. He organized the First Church of Christ in Sivells Bend, of which he and his wife were members.
On 12 Sep 1918, Harvey's World War 1 Draft Registration Card has, Oliver Harvey ALTUM age 43, born 20 Jul 1875. He was living in Sivells Bend, Cooke County, Texas. He was a farmer. His nearest relative was Mrs. O. H. ALTUM. He was medium height and stout with blue eyes and brown hair.
In 1918, Harvey died, just a few days before his mother's death.
On 28 Nov 1918, on Thursday, the Gainesville newspaper obituary reads, "Oliver Harvey ALTUM, O. H. ALTUM, aged 45 years died Tuesday night at his home at Sivell's Bend, after a brief illness of pneumonia. The funeral took place yesterday at the Red River Cemetery."
On 29 Jan 1920, the census shows the widowed Lorah ALTUM age 38, living in Precinct 5, Cooke County, Texas. With her were her children Clyde age 18, born Oklahoma; and Lena age 10, born in Oklahoma. They were renting their home.

Bell's childhood was a sad one. Her mother was in love withher father, John STICE. He was not in love with her, as he was in love withher older sister, who was in love with someone else. So John decided to move to Kansas to get away from the situation. He was followed by Bell's mother. She took a train there and arrived with no money, forcing John to keep her, which resulted in the birth of Bell. John moved back to Gainesville, Shortly after the birth of Bell, her mother went back to Gainesville, dropped off her baby with the grandparents and then went back to Kansas, never to be seen again.
Bell remained with her grandparents. Her father had married and lived in Gainesville. He gave gifts to her continually and lots of new store purchased clothes, which made the other children of the community jealous of her. She would therefore dress in older clothes, or end up playing by herself.
Bell's loved her grandfather very much. Many people would stop by their home just to hear his stories. He had explored the great northwestern part of the United States, and had many stories to tell about it.
Bell was a very particular person in everything she did. Her house keeping and flower gardening were immaculate. She was a very good cook. Her cooking and gardening was taught to her by her mother-in-law, Bell, whom she called mother Bell. The only mother she ever had. Bell had a beautiful voice and sang in the church choir.

In the winter months, Agnes would live with her grandmother Bell, as it was closer to the country school. On the weekends and in the summers, she would live with her parents.
On 20 Apr 1910, the census shows George ELKINS age 15, living with his widowed mother Virginia ELKINS age 59. She was born in Tennessee. His brother and sister were there too. George was a farm laborer. Virginia had given birth to 17 children. Only 8 living at time of census.
Agne's met George at her Grandmother Bell's. He was working on a ranch near them. One very hot day, he sat next to her at church and fanner her through the entire service. She thought he was being terribly forward. The only reason he was attending the church service was because he knew she would be ther. Later they began courting. After some time, they decided to marry. George picked her up in his buggy and they went to Gainesville, where they were married by Mr. Chisum. After they were married, they started for her parent's home, but a blizzard hit and they made it as far as her granmother's home, whre they spent the night. The next day they went on to her parent's home, where they spent a few days. They then loaded the buggy and a wagon and they moved to a house where he was overseer of a ranch.

During the depression of the 1930's, Professor Homer MERRIK, from Illinois, was looking for work. He met George, who in turn offered him a job for the summer. When winter came, he went back to Illinois. George told him to bring his wife back next year. The next year came and he did bring his wife, Ruby (McARTHUR) MERRIK, a professional opra singer. George's doctor lived across the road and his daughter was a professional pianist. On evenings, after all the work wa sfinished, all the hired hands, the Doctor's family and George's family would get together. Mary would play the piano and Ruby would sing. They had their own private concerts there in the countryside during the middle of the great depression.
George's mother was an invalid. She lived iwth them and was taken very good care of by them. Agnes' mother was brought there also, where he provided a house for her on his ranch. She was strong and did much to help everyone.
Agnes was very dedicated to her church. She never missed a Sunday or Sunday night service and she usually attended on Wednesday evening as well. She was a member of the First Church of Christ. George attended church with her, but remained true to his church, the Baptist Church. He never told her though, because he did not want to hurt her. He loved her very much and wanted her to be happy.
They had a very nice home in Gainesville, apart from their home on the ranch. They usually rented that home out. In their latter years, they lived in that home. They lived there about 18 years.
After the death of George, Agnes moved in with her daughter, Margaret PLUMLEE, who had built a nice room onto her home for Agnes, so that she could have her own privacy.
Politically, George and Agnes were both Democrats, because Texas was a Democrat state. There was usually no one running on the Republican ticket.
Agnes had hazel eyes and she had dark brown hair. She was a beautiful lady. She had a wonderful personality. Anyone who met her would instantly feel close to her. She took after her grandmother Bell, as she had the same kindness and love in her that Aunt Bell had.
George had hazel eyes and black hair. He was a strong man and worked very hard and provided very well for his family and anyone else who needed help. He gave his love to his children and was greatly missed by them when he died.
