Shadden School – March 10, 1983

This information was furnished by Archie Beard (who attended this school and still lives in the area now), Loren and Vera Middleton (who live in the vicinity also – Loren taught Shadden School several years), and from records of George Cox (he lived on South Broadway where Cantrell Agency is now located at the time of his death, who taught there about 1880 or 1881), and from records of William J. Cox (who taught there in 1909 or 1910.

John Beard deeded the ground to the Directors of District 6 (see Book T, page 578) Oct. 9, 1863.  It was filed April 9, 1864.  The description was “Begin at the section line in Section 26 4 rd N, thence 10 rd W. making Ό A.”  This was the S.E. corner of NE Ό  SE  Ό  Section 26  T3N R4E.

The name probably came from the Shaddens who owned the land to the south and had furnished the land for Shadden Cemetery.  The cemetery is nearby.

The earliest teacher we have records of is George Cox.  Luther Beard, Archie’s father, always told of going to school on Christmas Day while Mr. Cox was teaching.  He had perfect attendance that year.  Luther also went to school to Mary Lawson.  She was a sister of the late John Lawson, the father of several children still living in this area including Tommy and Fred of Xenia, Illinois,  Mary Meador of Iuka, Illinois and Frieda Lawson of Salem, Illinois.

Dick Waters taught when Archie was in first grade.  Martha Potter finished that Spring term.  Next was Jake Warren who taught 5 months.  Lige Crundwell taught that Spring term.  Luther Morton followed.  The big boys did not get the best of him.  He stopped the fun.  He cut two big switches and switched one big boy and promised to whip another if he did not sit down.  This impressed Archie as a third grader.

Arthur Hiestand, son of Columbus Hiestand, came next.  The picture included with this article was taken while Libby Skinner, who was Pete Joines’ mother, was the teacher.  William J. Cox, father of Maxine Cox Barksdale, taught Shadden School about 1909 or 1910.  Gladys Littrell Morrison furnished a picture of that year.  It appeared in the Times Commoner a few months ago.

Millie Long Kelchner and Bert Millican each taught about that time.  Archie only went to school one day when Grace Hultz taught.  Bill Huser taught during the winter and Archie attended then.  This was during the days that older students may have taken seventh and eighth grade two or three times rather than go to high school and it also helped pass those long winter days.

In the later part of the winter while Bessie Nelms Borton was teaching the school caught fire.  Several big boys had gone to Crab Apple to skate.  Archie climbed the ladder, one built with one upright and cross pieces to step up.  The little boys and girls carried water and the fire was extinguished.  About a week later the ceiling fell on the stove.  Just as the mess was cleaned, Superintendent of Schools Thrasher came.

Maggie Slagley taught in 1920.  She became ill, and Eula Middleton Bard completed the term.

Tince Murphy, the teacher in 1920-1921, condemned the old school.  His daughter, Dorothy Murphy Spitler, finished his year of teaching.

The new school was built in 1921 in time for the next school year.  That old school is still a crib on the Leslie Beard estate.

Loren Middleton began teaching at Shadden in the mid-twenties and taught eleven years, Orthel Tate taught one year, then Loren went back one more year.  Pansy Beard Mulvaney went all eight years to Shadden to the same teacher – Loren.

In no order: Merle Anderson, 2 terms.  Ula Beard 1948-1950.  Ben Millican, Genelle Smith Slagley, Velma Edwards Wilkerson (DFM note: should be “Wilkinson”), and finally Marshall McCarty taught the last two years the one room school were in session.

Loren told of one experience – One of the older boys was running, ran into a tree, and broke his arm.  Loren had one of the eighth grade girls take up school and he took the boy home.  The boy’s father was in the field and told Loren, “If you think he needs to go to the doctor, you go ahead and take him.”   Loren did, and the doctor set the arm.  He took the boy home and returned to school to find that the Superintendent of Schools had visited while he was gone.  Since everything was going along O.K., Mr. Chance seemed pleased.  The boy was back the next day and never missed another day.

Loren listed some directors he remembered – Jim Rogers, Virgil Bartley, Ernest Sander, Gerald Cantrell, Masel Hanks, Francis Beard, and Clyde Mulvaney.

The Bartleys, Linders, and Burketts all had large families, and their children all went to Loren.

He and Vera say it is a pleasure to be remembered by the students who have gone to school to them.

Shadden School House has been converted into a home now.  Hugh Coughlin bought the ground (one acre) and then sold it to Jerry Beard – several generations down from the original owner.  Jerry and his family are living there now.

(The letter below was submitted to the “Salem Times-Commoner” after the above article was printed):

     Editor:

This is concerning your bit of history concerning Shadden School.

There was one of the large families not listed, which attended Shadden School.  Mr. Loren Middleton was also their teacher.  This was between the years of 1926 and 1937.  There were seven or eight of them in the family.  They were children of Willie Bryan.

They were a nice bunch of kids.  I know.  I married one of them and lived with him 40 years until death took him away.

                                                                                                                                                                                        Elsie Bryan, Rt. 3, Salem.
