Oak Ridge School – Meacham twp - District 16

(One Room School Memorial – Archives - Salem, IL)

Oak Ridge School was also nicknamed “Tick _______________________ only knew it as “Tick Ridge”  It was one of the largest one-room school houses.  The road in front of the school, south, was the dividing line.  The ones living on the south side of the road went to Kinmundy schools and the ones on the north side of the road went to Farina, when it was consolidated.

Mark Mulvaney now owns the land.  Mrs. Evelyn Pillman has the big bell and Miss Lottie Mae Mulvaney has the teacher’s desk.

Morton Mulvaney served on the school board 16 years and when he asked not to vote him in again, the people voted his wife, Edith

Ethel Mulvaney in and she served 12 years and was still in office when the school was consolidated.

At the beginning, there was no drinking water and the older children carried water from what is known now as Mrs. Evelyn Pillman’s farm house.  In later years, “Coon” Howell was hired to drill a well.  He drilled a real good well and there was plenty of drinking water.

There was also a new garage built the year Goldie Beard taught and it was made for a horse to stay in, as there were mud roads and the teacher rode a horse.  Leon Miller bought the garage at the sale.  Harvey Pillman bought the school house and tore it down.

The “Hound Dog Club” has its annual show now where the site old Oak Ridge School set.  The big oak trees are all gone now except one.

Here are some of the board members, I remember, serving with Morton and Edith Mulvaney: Ike Boston, Earl Courson, Harvey Pillman, Mary Sinclair, Ezra Feller, Masel Bouseman.
