(According to "The Kinmundy Express" on Oct. 11, 1951, an article was included about the original records of the local school districts, the districts were established in 1872.   In the first records available from 1877, it states that in Meacham twp., Lacey School was District #12.)

Lacey School – Meacham twp

(One Room School Memorial – Archives - Salem, IL)

 

            School District No. 2, Township 4, Range 4, East; 3rd Principal Meridian, Marion County, Illinois is the description given for the location of Lacey School in the earliest available records.

            Lacey School, located in the northeast corner of Meacham township, Marion Co, Illinois, was a one room wood frame building erected on land donated by the John W. Parrill family.

            The records available date back to 1879, when the board of directors were Gabe Lacey, A.H. Lacey, and Andrew Shanafelt.  In 1880, Gabe Lacey was replaced by O.T. Arrington and the board met and levied $90.00 for the coming school year.  Maria Mahon was hired as teacher for $16.00 a month.

            In July 1913 the Board levied $250.00 for the coming year.

On January 31, 1919 Lacey School was closed by the Board of Health.  On April 24, 1919, the Board met and reorganized with Fred Hohlt as President, Jesse Norman as Clerk, and George Geiger as Director.  May 25, 1919 they employed Ronald Lacey as teacher for $80 per month.  In 1920, Myrtle G. Lacey taught for $69.00 a month.  No teachers were listed for several years.  A partial list includes Alta Green, Harold Von Behren, Genelle Slagley in 1935-36, Katherine Bottoms in 1937 at $65, Iris Brown in 1938 at $70.00, Alma Walters in 1939 for $75.00, Ann Schmidt and Edna Schwabe in 1949 at $80.00, Floyd Humble – 1942-43 at $90, Stella Purcell – 1943 at $85.00, Helen Storck – 1944-45 at $100.00, Leah Williams – 1946-47 at $150.00, Otis Tate – 1948, and Lovadna Reichert from 1948 to 1954 when the school was closed and the students were bussed to the schools in Farina.  The school building remained on that location, being used as a grainery until it was torn down a few years ago.
