"SCHOOLS
"The first settlers taught their own children or one, who was more educated than the rest, taught all the neighboring children. The first school in this area was a log house with a puncheon floor, large fireplace with stick chimney, and no windows. It was built northwest of Kinmundy in 1837 and was taught by Samuel Whiteside. It was later moved to the lot, just west of the C.&E.I. railroad and south of the cemetery turn, and classes were held there until 1857. Miss Annaline Pruett taught in 1856.
After the town was laid out, Judge D.P. Snelling donated a lot on Fremont street, just north of the French home, and a new building was erected there. This was frame, 36'x24' with a hall. Classes were taught by James P. Smith of Hudson, New Hampshire. Later teachers were W.R. Hubhard, Dr. L. S. Skilling, N. S. Hubbard and Miss Carrie Herrick.
This building became so crowded in the 60s that the directors rented a hall on lot 64 in the original town, and held classes there for the older pupils. Professor Pollard was instructor and he was followed by Professor Vincent of Farina. When the new school was finished this hall was bought by the Presbyterians who used it as a church and Sunday school.
In the 80s "Select School" was held here. This was a spring term in March and April after the Public school closed in February. Pupils paid $1.00 per month tuition. The hall was later moved down town to the corner of Second and Madison street, where it stood many years.
In the fall of 1865 a new four-room frame building was erected on the site of the present high school. This opened in October, with Prof. Simeon Wright, ex-soldier of the Civil War, as principal. He came from Bloomington, Illinois. Miss Permelia Elder taught the grammar department, Miss Amelia Woodruff the intermediate, and Miss Matilda Young, the primary. The contractor was Tilden Raser; W. C. Smith was one of the carpenters. In 1883 it was necessary to enlarge this and two rooms were added on the north, making six rooms in all.
This was torn down in 1910, and a two-story brick building erected, which served both grades and high school until 1955, when a new grade school was built on the Kinmundy-Louisville blacktop east of town. High school and junior high continue in the old building.
In 1912 our school was accredited by the University of Illinois so that our pupils can enter university without entrance examinations. In 1924 a gymnasium was built at the north end of the school grounds and served for all school functions, as well, as town affairs, until the new and larger one was finished this last year.
Early rural students walked miles through snow and mud, rode horseback or stayed during the week with townspeople, and were the baby sitters of that era. After the automobile became standard equipment, country roads were improved and in1940 school buses were instituted to bring country pupils to school.
This was the death knell for the one-room country school, and now North Fork, Arnold Chapel, Maple Grove, Shanghai, Wilson and other country school pupils ride in to Kinmundy school. The buildings have been sold and are converted into town-houses, community centers or even dwellings.
In 1941, High School District 25 was enlarged into Community High School District 500, and in August, 1953, the Kinmundy-Alma Consolidated District 301 was formed. With all this growth, new buildings have been added, a cafeteria and home economics building in 1949, and an Ag building in 1954. The newest addition is the new gym."

According to information, this was probably the first frame school in Kinmundy, and was built in 1857.
It was located on Fremont Street, just north of the Charles B. French home. The land was donated by D.P. Snelling.

This is possibly a photo from that early school (which was built on Fremont Street in Kinmundy in 1857.)
"Centralia Sentinel" – Dec. 21, 1865 - "Kinmundy"
Last Friday we paid a visit to this fine little village. We passed through Kinmundy in ’62, when we went for a soldier, and but few places have improved more since that time. One of the most conspicuous improvements, is the fine new school-house. We made our first visit to this building, and found about 250 pupils, under the charge of Prof. Simeon WRIGHT, and his Assistants, Miss ELDER, Miss WOODRUFF, and Miss HITE. The building is an ornament to the place, and very well planned, except that the rooms should have been ten feet longer, so as to give more room for recitations around the teacher’s platforms. People never make a worse mistake than to make their school-houses too small through false notions of economy. We were particularly pleased with the school. The pupils have enjoyed the advantages of their new house, and good grading but ten weeks, and all could see in the system and thoroughness of organization and drill, that the teachers clearly understood their business, and that the pupils worked readily and intelligently in their new duties. Prof. WRIGHT has been long identified with the educational enterprises of our State, and the people of Kinmundy have been very fortunate to secure the advantages of his long experience and his enlarged views. He has his school well arranged, and by his thorough drill, he will soon have them prepared for their classes, their deficiencies romved and the whole school moving in the clock like regularity, so characteristic of the efficient graded school. In this work he is ably seconded by his Assistant teachers. The people of Kinmundy have reason to feel proud of their schools. It is by the establishment of such schools, that our country is to assume her position among the intelligent counties of the State. No better evidence of enterprise and public spirit can be given than such a school, as the Kinmundy School. Strangers seeking for places to invest capital, or start business, will always look at such evidences of intelligence and enterprise.
"The Kinmundy Express"; Aug. 31, 1905 - “The Past and Present – A Brief History of Kinmundy”
The first school ever taught in the town was superintended by Miss Analine PREWETT now Mrs. A.C. PARKER. She says that she was teaching in a house that stood over northwest near the present site of the city cemetery and that a difficulty arose among the patrons over some trivial affair and they moved her and a portion of her scholars to one room of a log dwelling that stood about where the City Park is now located, being the property of the father of George Neavills of our city. Wm. HUBBARD taught the first school in the first schoolhouse built in Kinmundy.
The following information was printed in the 1926 Kinmundy School Yearbook.
"The district school was held in 1856 in a rough log house near the spot known as the present home of Tom Phillips, west of the C. & E. I. railroad.
The teacher was Miss Annaline Prewett.
The first school house built after the town was founded, was erected in the early fall of 1857. It was a frame building, 36 x 24 with hall. This was built
on a lot donated by D.P. Snelling. The lot was on the north side of the residence of C.B. French.
James P. Smith of Hudson, New Hampshire, was the first teacher. Following him were W.R. Hubbard, Dr. L.D. Skilling, N.S. Hubbard and
Miss Carrie Herrick.
The district became so popular early in 60s, the directors rented and arranged the C.P. Church for school, transferring the older pupils there,
and selecting Prof. Pollard as instructor, followed by Prof. Vincent of Farina.
In the fall of 1865, the new four room school house was built on the present site, was opened in October, 1865, and was occupied by the District.
Prof. Simeon Wright, ex-soldier of the Civil War, formerly from Bloomington, was Principal; Permelia Elder, Grammar Dept.; Miss Amelia Woodruff, Intermediate;
Miss Matilda Young, Primary.
The contractor for the building was Tilden Raser, with Dr. W.O. Smith as one of the carpenters.
Directors at that time time were: Judge D.P. Snelling, Horace Kinnic, and Capt. W.T. Sprouse. One of the early directors who served several terms
was A.W. Songer, who is now in his ninety-fourth year.
The only women who have served on the school board are Mrs. M. Hollister, Mrs. Fanny Simpson Schwartz, Mrs. M.A. Babcock, Mrs. Anna Frost
and Mrs. Mamie S. Brown.
The picture was taken at a school picnic in the spring of 1876 with N.S. Scovell as Supt. There are a number of familiar faces that the older ones might recognize.
The picture was preserved by Mrs. Mamie S. Brown, the cross showing her picture as six years old, now a teacher in the school."

"The Kinmundy Express" - May 26, 1910 - "The Old School House: "How oft we’ll remember in days that are coming; The olden brown schoolhouse that stood near the road. The hallway, the stairway, the time-worn schoolrooms; And every loved spot that our schooldays have known; The bench in the hallway, the broken glass by it; Where all stop to glance at reflections there in; The rope from the bell tower, the rusty gong nigh it, And even the whole school house that all of us knew. The battered old school house, the time scarred school house, Kinmundy’s old school house that stood by the road. ‘Twas the school of our fathers; their fathers well knew it. For’t was built long ago in the days of their youth. They wandered the aisles in this self same school room, And learned in this place the lessons of truth. But now it is gone; ‘tis replaced by another, A cheer for the new one; a tear for the old, For time can’t erase from our hearts the remembrance; Of initial carved desks and the dull frescoed; The old battered school house with it’s stair always all footworn; Kinmundy’s old schoolhouse of it’s glories all shorn; Farewell to the school house for it’s usefulness over; And memories sacred shall close it around; ‘Twas the friend of our youth; we are still its same lover; Too a new one displace it upon the old ground; And when its removed from the old situation; A thought of regret will return until me, And something of love bind us closer together; For the olden brown schoolhouse that stood ‘neeth the trees. The old battered school house the time-scarred school house, Kinmundy’s old school house that stood near the road." This parody was sung the last day of school by Georgia NIRIDER, Margaret COUGHLIN, Mattie HENSLEY, Lily ZIEGLER, Ruth ROHRBOUGH, Clara HAMMERS, Cleta BRANSON, and Della BAYLISS, of Room 3."

"The Kinmundy Express" - May 12, 1910 - "Corner Stone Laying: The work on the new Kinmundy Public School building is progressing very nicely and a large amount of the building material is on the ground. The foundation is partly completed and new brick masons are being added to the work almost every day. It has been definitely decided to have a corner stone laying and the exercises will be under the direction of the A.F. & A.M. lodge of this city and it is likely Judge William WRIGHT of Effingham, will be invited to act as Master of Ceremonies. The complete program and the exact date will appear in the next issue of this paper and it is hoped that everybody will assist in making this event a memorable one and a day that the citizens of Kinmundy can look to with a great degree of pride."
"The Kinmundy Express” - June 2, 1910: The cornerstone of the new Kinmundy Public School Building was laid last Wednesday afternoon with appropriate services by the Board of Education and others. A large crowd was in attendance and the box was well filled with papers and other articles. The work on the building is progressing nicely and it looks now like the fall term of our school will open in the new building.

"The Kinmundy Express" - Sept. 22, 1910:
"Building Dedicated: Last Monday the beautiful new twenty thousand dollar Kinmundy school building was dedicated and opened to the public and large crowd was in attendance, including many out of town people. In the morning, the fall and winter term of school was opened, and at 11 o’clock the school work of the day closed, and the public stepped in. The new building is certainly a grand structure and the school deserves a great amount of praise for getting such a building for the amount expended. It is constructed of Danville Pressed Brick with stone trimmings and the interior is finished with tinted walls, the wood being left in it’s natural colors. The hard wood floors add greatly to the interior of the building and seem to add the finishing touch to the inside beauty of the building.
The school grounds have been ______ so as to slope from the building in every direction and the broad concrete walk in the front and all along the east side of the school grounds certainly make it a beautiful place and ____ of which every person in Kinmundy and vicinity are justly proud. At the noon hour, a large crowd enjoyed a basket dinner on the school grounds and about 1:30 the Kinmundy Band furnished some of their excellent music after which a program was rendered in the High School room. Prof. H.W. SHRYOCK of Carbondale, delivered the dedicatory address which was greatly enjoyed by all. His address was an inspiration to the school ____ children, pointing out the advantage of a good education and in many instances illustrating his points by his personal experiences and travels. Prof. SHRYOCK has addressed our people on various occasions and always ____ his audience. After the address, short talks were given by former teachers who were ______. Those from out of town being J.S. KNISELEY, and Prof. M.A. THRASHER of Salem; and Miss Ada _______ of Kiowa, Kan. School work was resumed Tuesday morning with the following teachers: Frank D. HARWOOD, Mrs. Emma BRYAN, Misses Mae MATTHEWS, Pauline BAGOTT, Martha WALKER, Clemmie WHITTENBURG, Fannie K. EAGAN, Mary SHRIVER; all proficient in their work, with the present facilities insure the best work in the history of the schools.
"Salem Republican" - Sept. 22, 1910
"The Kinmundy Public School opened on Monday with the following corps of teachers: F.D. HARWOOD, Supt.; Mrs. E.M. BRYAN, Principal; Mae MATTHEWS, Ass't. Principal; Pauline BAGOTT, Clem WHITTENBURG, Martha WALKER, Fannie EAGAN, and Mary E. SHRIVER, grades.
Kinmundy's new school house was formally dedicated Monday afternoon. Prof. H.W. SHRYOCK of Carbondale delivered the address. Short talks were also made by former teachers, scholars and members of the board. During the afternoon the building was inspected by hundreds of visitors. Kinmundy is justly proud of the new building, which is certainly a credit to the community and especially the building committee."
