"The Kinmundy Express" - June 3, 1948 - "Zatso" column:

"Gosh, I am just about worn to a frazzle after having a weekend like this one was.  And to my way of thinking, it was certainly one of the best weekends I have spent in my entire life.  Now that’s saying a whole lot but it’s true.  If there is anything better than eating strawberry shortcake and greeting old friends, I can’t think what it would be.  I have just completed two days of it.

Saturday evening was the annual alumni reception.  That afternoon my old friend and classmate, Ray HAMILTON, dropped in town. It had been prearranged that he would make the mansion his headquarters and he did.  After his arrival, naturally, I didn’t get a thing done, but just sit and ask and answer questions.  He was all thrilled and so was I.  The first thing I knew I had to bust myself to get all prettied up to go to the reception.  And there it was a continual round of handshaking, both for and Ray, more for Ray than myself.  You see this was Ray’s first time to attend the alumni reception and it has been more than a quarter of a century since he graduated.  Naturally, in that length of time, while faces were familiar, names had slipped away.  So several introductions were in order.  We spent a very enjoyable evening at this affair and didn’t even make an attempt to go home until the last hour of the day was almost over.  Then after were arrived home, we just couldn’t go to bed without having another session of gabbing.

            Then Sunday morning, we made a special trip to the cemetery, just to see who we could see.  And sure enough, we met up with several old friends.  And then again, in that afternoon, it was another constant round of  handshaking.

            Really and truly, the climax came Sunday evening when the class of ’18 met for a reunion.  Naturally, to my way of thinking this was the best class that ever graduated from the Kinmundy High School.  I know that you think your class was the best and you have a right too.  So we just won’t argue over that.

            Yes, we had classmates present who hadn’t seen one another since they graduated, thirty years ago.  Now when you say thirty years, that really doesn’t seem very long.  But when you get to thinking about it, a lot of water has gone over the dam in that length of time. 

            There were twenty-two in this class and we are happy to say that all are living today.  Of this number, fifteen were present with their husbands and wives and some had their children.  Others brought pictures of their children and grandchildren.  In addition, were happy to have with us, two of our high school teachers, Miss Pauline BAGOTT and Mrs. Laura FISHER.

            As soon as the services were ended at the cemetery, we gathered at the schoolhouse and inspected the building from cellar to garret.  You can imagine the changes that have been made in thirty years time.  And I was agreeably surprised at the number of things that weren’t forgotten in the thirty years time. 

            After a thorough inspection, we stood in front of the building for a couple of pictures.  Then we went to the banquet room of the Masonic Temple where the ladies of the Eastern Star served us with a chicken dinner, topped off with strawberry shortcake.  Everyone had prepared themselves for this dinner by fasting for three days before.  Or at least it appeared that way from the way they ate.

            After dinner we went to the reception room and then the real fun began.  After milling around in order to get our dinner settled, we again recalled thirty years and school took up.  As was the custom of those days, we had ten minutes of opening exercises.  Georgia NIRIDER played the piano while Miss Laura FISHER lead us in singing some of our old school songs.  Then we held a class in public speaking.  Each member of the class, as well as the two teachers, give us a resume of their life for the past thirty years.  This class run over time just a little.  In fact, it consumed the time equal to six forty minute periods.  Just before the class was dismissed, we suddenly jumped to the present era and all joined in singing the chorus of “This is the Hour.” 

            No truer words were ever spoken.  It was mighty hard to say goodbye.  And some of us didn’t say goodbye until rather late.  We were rather hesitant about calling it the end of another perfect day.  Our only regret was that some of our classmates could not be with us.  We were all disappointed when we found they could not be here for this occasion.  And truly sorry that one member who had made plans to come, took ill and couldn’t make the trip.  Anyway, those of us who were here will have many pleasant memories of this occasion.  Before dismissal, the class did express their desire of having reunions a little oftener.  We held one ten years ago and they thought it was just a little too long in between.  Realized that it would be rather hard to make it every year, we did decide to make it at least every five years.

            The members of the class present were Margaret COUGLIN HILKERT and two daughters; Mary CHEADLE VERHOEKS, husband, two sons, and daughter-in-law; Amelda O’BRIEN VALLOW; Georgia NIRIDER BARCROFT and husband, Myrtle LACEY RILEY and husband; Pearl JACKSON HANNA and husband; Hattie CARPENTER SPIESE and husband; Nelle DISS BLOMBERG and husband; Lela SWIFT HELPINGSTINE and husband; Mildred WADE ROBB and husband; Stella WAINSCOTT LANE and husband; Lura WILLIAMS ROBNETT; Ray HAMILTON; William DOOLEN and wife; and yours truly and the g.m.

            Yes thirty years has slipped by in a hurry.  Although none of the class so stated, but I know they have all had their ups and downs.  I know I have and they are all just like me.  Some are still holding their own as far as their hair is concerned but the greater majority have a few streaks of gray.  Some are using store teeth to aid in their digestion.  Some are wearing bifocals.  Some have hip bones protruding just a little while others are suffered from fallen chests.  Most all of us has had some kind of operation and dog-gone it, that was one thing we forgot to talk about.  Most all of us are affected with “crow feet” in spite of the fact of all the modern beauty equipment.

            There were fifteen girls in the class.  Of this number, I think there were nine of them who taught school until they could find themselves a man.  The other six did various things until they found a mate.  They are now practicing Home Economics which they did not learn in school.  All except one and she chose a nursing career and is still at it.  The seven boys chose various careers.  Most all of them did various work but at present they can be classed thusly: district Agent, Extension Agricultural Service; Tonsorial Artist; Precision Machine Operator and Mechanic; U.S. Weather Observer and Forecaster; Civil Engineer; Railroad Passenger Conductor and State Legislator; and a dumb editor.

            So you can plainly see that this class was just an average class.  However, it spit of the different walks of life, we all have one thing in common and that is we are all still working on our first million.  Maybe within the next thirty years some of us can start on the second.  Some of the class has been more prolific than others.  In making a total of the (living) children, we find there are forty-four, just twice the number in the class.  There are seven grandchildren divided among three grandmas and two grandpas.  Other members of the old class are eligible but have not accomplished this fete as yet.

            Well, I could just go on and talk about this class and about this reunion.  I am just like you, I am proud of my class and get a thrill out of talking about it.  And I can truthfully say, that if you want to get a real thrill and something that will do your heart good, just get your own class together of a reunion sometime.”

KAHS Class of ’62 Enjoys Reunion - “The Marion County Observer” – June 2012 - By Gerri Molina

            The Class of 1962 Kinmundy-Alma High School started their reunion on Friday evening, May 25, 2012, gathering for a get re-acquainted party at the Pizza Man restaurant in Salem.  Everyone enjoyed trying to figure out who some of their classmates were – “I don’t know who that is, do you?”  “Maybe it’s so and so, do you that’s who it is?”

            Everyone was finally identified and the visiting continued over a meal of pizza, salad and a beverage.

            The noise got so loud, the group sounded like a bunch of teenagers at the local hang out – remember Crain’s Café or Bargh’s Drug Store?

            Those attending were Barbara Copple Cavalleri and husband Tom Heinan from St. Elmo; Stanley Cheadle of Carlsbad, Calif; Robert and Cheryl Williams Cobb of Sullivan; Wayne and Mary Ruth Currie Cross from Buffalo, Ill.; Jerry and Mary Lee Helm Cruise of Centralia; Donald and Margaret Rose Hampsten of Kinmundy; Dale and Janet Jahraus of St. Peter; Larry and Jan Hanna Miller from Lecanto, Fla; Gerri Doudera Molina of Kinmundy; Keith and Susan Kline Smith of Kinmundy; Ruth Ann Eagan Jones of Kell.  Visitors, Richard and Veda Anderson of Rogers, Ark, and Larry Baylis, who had also attended school with us.  Ivan and Joyce Wilkins stopped in after we had finished eating to visit with us.

            After much visiting and remembering, everyone left agreeing to gather on Saturday night, May 26th, at the Kinmundy Community Center for the Alumni Banquet “and after gathering” Class of 1962 - Kinmundy-Alma High School.  Those meeting at the Banquet (minus Tom Heinan and Jerry Cruise), also included Jerry and Mildred Gray from Centralia.  After the dinner had been served, eaten and the meeting concluded, door prizes were given away.  Our group was very lucky to receive many of them, and Barbara Cavalieri also won the 50-50 raffle.

            We then adjourned to the Mayer Fellowship Hall at Kinmundy United Methodist Church for more visiting, picture taking, game playing and, if you can believe it, snacking!  We were joined there by Norman and Mary Ann Vandeveer Rhoades, our former band teacher.  We visited for hours before we all reluctantly went home, agreeing that we would like to possibly try to get together again in 5 years.

            We corresponded with Dave Linton, Nancy Thomas, Sandy Schoreck Sanderson, Karen Mulvaney Dohman, Janet Ford, Patsy Deadmon Johnson, Leslie Jamison, Dorothy Wilkins Keen and Louise Hines Humble, who were unable to attend.

Kinmundy-Alma Class of 1964 – 50th Reunion – June 14, 2014:

“The Farina News” –  June 24, 2014 - “Class of 1964 Holds 50th Reunion”

On June 14, 2014, the Class of ’64 held their class reunion at the Annex Building of the Marion County Savings Bank in Salem.  The committee had issued invitations to all of the people who had started their high school journey at K-A in 1960.  This totals approximately 51 people, some did not go until graduation at K-A.

Special activities were planned throughout the day for those attending.  These activities included a visit to the Museum sponsored by the Kinmundy Historical Society at the Webster home on N. Madison Street in Kinmundy, and a visit to Ingram’s Log Cabin Village, operated by classmate Robert Ingram.  The group stopped at Southern Comfort for lunch and then went to the “Leach” home on Louisville Road, now owned by the Folsoms.   These activities were arranged by Connie Leach Robnett Luker.

Keith Whitney welcomed the group and said table grace.  He also served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening.  Keith was the Senior class President, so this was an extension of his duties!

Those attending the reunion gathered in Salem for the evening meal catered by Deb’s from Altamont.  The tables were decorated with centerpieces of purple and white flowers with a “hornet” on each one.  Many items of memorabilia were shared.

Trivia games were played, and prizes were handed out for winners of various games; prizes had been purchased from the Historical Society and included Sesquicentennial items (crocks, Christmas Ornaments) and flower arrangements donated by Mary Cruise.

There was a lot of visiting and reconnecting with “old” friends and believe me some had to check a name tag to see who they were talking to.  Many pictures were taken and a special photographer was on hand to take pictures.  Carol Holley, daughter-in-law of Jim and Joyce (Doudera) Holley, was taking pictures which will be put on a disc for each one who wants one.

There was a special Memorial Page dedicated to Charles Crutchfield (killed in Vietnam in 1965), Robert Fox, Judy (Gray) Slane, Wilma (Jamison) Plumb, Bruce Gray, Jack Lee, Joe McElroy, Karen (Reese) Skeen, Jack Mulvany, Mike Schoreck, Mike Olden, and Gary White (died in 1963 before graduating).

"Salem Times-Commoner" - Aug. 22, 2018

     "The Kinmundy-Alma High School Class of 1973 held a 45-year class reunion on July 21 at the Salem Elks Lodge.

    Those attending from out-of-state were: Barbara (Breiman) Sadler of Greensboro, North Carolina; Charles and Melody (Cathcart) Paxton of Hemple, Missouri; Matthew and Mimi Hanna of Mequon, Wisconsin; and Gary and Paulette Huddlestun of Newburn, Tennessee.

    Attending from Illinois were Eddy and Lisa Mulvany of Troy, Rosemary Schlueter of Flora, Rita (Yates) Neaville of Iuka, David Ford, and Leonard and Sue Rose of Centralia; Alan and Terry (Gigar) Conant; Marilyn (Heicher) Henson, and Jim and Sheilah (Slater) Cripps of Salem, and Richard and Susan Day, Danny and Cindy (Feather) Krutsinger, Marlin Hall, Karen (Johnson) Smith, Floyd Tockstein, and Kenneth and Tila (Williams) Jones of Alma.

    A moment of silence was observed in honor of deceased classmates Rickey Rose, John Long, Patty (Albert) Tulukas, Paula (Wilkinson) Beer, Cathy (Yates) Lindsey, Robert Mulvany, Harold Neff, Joel Muehlhausen, and Elwood Brown.

    On Sunday, several classmates attended a cookout at the home of Leonard and Sue Rose."

"The Kinmundy-Alma High School Class of 1976 held their 40th class reunion on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at the Farina American Legion.  A dinner, catered by classmates, seemed to be enjoyed.  Classmates also gathered Friday night at The Loading Dock in Farina.   After a great get-together and weekend, classmates decided to start getting together annually.  Mike Greenwood stopped by after taking his family to a Cardinal ballgame."
