HISTORY OF SHRIVER SCHOOL

(Formerly District 1 Union – District 10 Union)

Information by Bertha (Rose) See.  Information taken from the school registers of District 71 Shriver.

(One Room School Memorial – Archives - Salem, IL)

“L.N. Kennedy bought district record book and check book for District 1 Union School.”

“They bought 66 ft. of slate black board in 1891, and on Sept. 4, 1895 Lem Kennedy and J.H. Shaffer sent to Bloomington for a 4 x 6 flag for $3.25.

In 1891, the name of the school was changed from District 1 to District 10, Union, Alma township.

On July 4, 1898, “The School Bord (as spelled in the record) met and maid out their enumeration of the children in District 10, Union and maid out their levey for 1898 ‘foor’ hundred and twenty five dollars and hired Myrtel Storment to teach our school 6 months and to commence Sept. 12, 1898.  The Bord is J.H. Shaffer, Ed. Craige and J.J. Parrish.”

On August 24, 1895, they bought “5 tuns” of coal for $6.25.

Reference was made to Shriver School in 1898, but did not become to be known by that name until 1915.

June 5, 1901, they hired Mary “Sheapard”  to teach 6 months for $30 a month.  Feb. 4, 1907, hired her for one month longer “turm”.  (*Note from Dolores Ford Mobley: Mary Shepard was my great-aunt.  She would later marry Ed Harrell.)

From the years 1902 until 1920, 6 months schools were in session.  In 1929, school year sessions were for 8 months.

Monthly Salaries, as shown by the registers, ranged from $28 per month in 1895 to $110 per month in 1947; however, in the Depression years in 1929 to 1936, salaries decreased for each month.

In 1916, A.B. Swalley was hired to teach and to do his own janitor work.  A new coal house was built in 1917.

Aug. 26, 1930, the board voted not to have school, being only 3 pupils.  Hired Dick Yund to haul them to Kinmundy at $1.50 per day.

Again in 1948, paid $1 a day to Ralph Rose to transport his child.

June 4, 1950, decided to send children to Kinmundy.  They voted to pay Verl See and Ralph Rose $50 each for hauling their children to the bus.
