“Alma Industrial College” - “The thought of an industrial school at Alma originated with Mr. W.S. ROSS, a graduate of Abingdon College, and pastor of the Alma Christian Church. The proposition was heartily favored by the community. Subscriptions were secured. Four acres of land were bought, and a good two-story, eight-room frame building was erected thereon. The title to this property was vested in a Board of Trustees. The school opened in September, 1896. It was coeducational and aimed to help worthy young people to start well in life. An option on 420 acres of land was secured, and a printing-office was bought and installed in the building. The aim was to have the boys work part of the time on the farm and the girls in the printing-office, and thus pay part of their expenses. In addition to this labor, every pupil paid $120 per annum. This work and cash secured for each and every pupil during the school year board and lodging, instruction and books. Experience proved that the school could not be maintained on this financial basis. Appeals for assistance in localities from which the school was easily accessible met with meager responses. Debt accumulated; hence, in 1900, the school was discontinued. The property was sold, for public uses, for $3,000, which was said to have been one-half of its value. All debts were settled. The averaged attendance during the four years was about one hundred per year. The men who served as head of the school or president were H.Y. KELLER, W.H. BOLES, A.A. HIBNER, Clark BRADEN, W.B. BEDELL, P.J. DICKERSON and Thomas MUNNELL. Mr. MUNNELL died just before the final closing of the institution. His body is buried at Alma. One of the papers in Isaac Maulding’s pension file was on letterhead from the Alma Industrial College.

I don’t know how long this college was in existence, and don’t recall having read much about it, but maybe it will help someone.

The only one I can identify is T.B. McCartan. He was Thomas B. McCartan who married Nannie Spitler.

Thomas and Nannie were the parents of Charles E. McCartan.

Charles married Elsie Maulding and after she died, he married her sister, Sarah Etta Maulding.

The Maulding sisters were my great-aunts. Aunt Etta died in Centralia 9 July 1977, at the age of 99.

”The Kinmundy Express” - Feb. 19, 1948:

“Alma P.T.A. Buys Projector: The P.T.A. of Alma School succeeded in getting a new projector for the school. For sometime the need of a projector for the village of Alma has been noted. But due to shortage of funds and the high cost of a projector no effort was made to get it. The P.T.A. at the close of the school year 1946-47 had decided to purchase a duplicating machine which cost $125. This was to be paid for at the beginning of this term. This debt had to be taken care of. It was paid by means of the small amount on hands and by the money that was made by the children on their premiums from the County Fair on school work. Then to finish the projector a bingo party was given. A goodly sum was received from this which finished paying for the duplicator and left a nest egg to use for the projector. The P.T.A. in it’s first meeting of the current year, voted to raise money to buy the projector or if not enough money was raised, to continue the project into the next year. A Harvest Carnival was held in November. Total receipts from this amounted to $250.01. Limericks were sent out in December. A nice sum was taken in from this. A great many dollars for the two projects above, came from out of town sources. Last January, a bake sale was held. Then the final amount was given in donations by liberal friends of both Alma and surrounding communities. Today we are very proud of our Bell and Howard 16 mm projector bought for $650. During the school year 1946-47-48, Mrs. John FORD has been President of the local P.T.A., with her officers which consisted of Mrs. Wm. HESTER - Vice President, Mrs. Theo. DIETRICH- Treasurer; Mrs. Vernon GRAGG-Secretary, also the many committees of other P.T.A. members have put out a great deal of effort to reach this goal. The pupils and teachers of Alma are grateful and wish to extend their thanks in this great project.”
