Della S. (RUSH) CRAIG GREGORY

b. Feb. 8, 1860 near Alma, IL; d. Aug. 26, 1936 in Alma, IL.

Daughter of Samuel RUSH & Rebecca (HATFIELD) RUSH McCARTY.

Della S. RUSH married 1) in 1883 to Jay CRAIG of Kinmundy (d. 1912). They had :

1. Harry Forrest Craig (married Grace Shepard).

Della S. (RUSH) CRAIG married 2) in 1915 to Joseph E. GREGORY of Alma.

Joseph E. GREGORY

b. Nov. 28, 1863; d. Sept. 9, 1938.

Married 1) on Nov. 28, 1881 to Charlotte Ann "Lottie" KANABLE (Feb. 18, 1866 - Apr. 8, 1914).

Joseph GREGORY & Lottie (KANABLE) GREGORY had:

1. Roy E. Gregory (May 12, 1885 - Aug. 30, 1971). Married Leona Fox.

2. Warren Everett Gregory (Oct. 16, 1886 - March 25, 1965). Married Hanna Luella Grotts.

3. Laura B. Gregory (Feb. 20, 1890 - Jan. 28, 1915). Married Carl Michael See; Married C.W. Hanna.

4. Rolla F. Gregory (Nov. 4, 1905 - Dec. 23, 1980). Married Mary Inez Arnold.

5. Lottie E. Gregory (Jan. 27, 1912 - Apr. 12, 2006). Married Loren R. Williams.

Married 2) in 1915 to Della S. RUSH (Feb. 8, 1860 near Alma, IL; d. Aug. 26, 1936 in Alma, IL).

"Della S. Rush was the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca Hatfield Rush. She was born near Alma, IL. She married Jay Craig in 1883, and they had 1 child, a boy, Harry Forrest Craig. Her husband died in 1912. She married 1915 to Joseph E. Gregory of Alma. She took over raising Joseph's 2 youngest children, Rolla, age 9, and Lottie, age 3. The children said: "she was all our own mother could have been to us." at the time of her death. She died Aug. 26, 1936, at 4:30 o'clock after a brief illness at the age of 76 years.

She leaves her husband, one son, Dr. H.F. Craig, one grandson, J. Forrest Craig, a daughter-in-law, Grace Shepard Craig, three step-sons, Roy E. and Rolla F. Gregory of Alma, and Warren Everett Gregory, of Iuka; 2 step daughters, Mrs. Loren Williams of Alma, and Mrs. C.W. Hanna of Edwards, Mississippi; 3 sisters, Mrs. Kate Craig of Alma, Mrs. Sarah Dean of Sumner, Illinois, and Mrs. John Lynch of Kinmundy, Illinois.

She had 3 half-brothers: Harry McCarty of Alma, Jake McCarty of Kinmundy, and B.F. McCarty of Salem. She also had a step-brother, R.V. McCarty of Salem. Funeral services were held from the Christian Church in Kinmundy, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. O.L. Hawkins of Salem, officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery."

"Lottie Ellen (Gregory) Williams was born in Alma, the daughter of Joseph and Lottie Ellen (Kanable) Gregory. Her mother died in 1914 when she was three. Her father married Della Rush (McCarty) Craig who came to live with (and care for) Joseph and his 2 youngest children, Lottie and Rolla.

She married Loren Williams in 1931. They had no children of their own, but kept the children of others as well as foster children, and then adopted a infant son, Richard Martin Williams (father, Ralph Chandler).

From the time before they were married until the time they retired, she and her husband had worked both at home on their farm and at jobs outside of their home in Alma and Salem.

She cared for her bedridden husband at home for over ten years while she was wheel chair bound. She and her husband were strong members and supporters of the Alma M.E. church.

When her husband died she moved from her trailer home on East Olive street in Salem to a public housing apartment in Glenwood Acres Three. From there, after a series of helath problems, she moved to the Doctor's Nursing Home and after an extended period of hospice care administered at the nursing home, eventually died at the age of 93. Funeral services were held at the Rankn Funeral Home in Salem and burial was in the Alma Cemetery, Alma, IL."
